Breathing easier now.

This is one of the best, easy reading books on indoor air quality I have found. It leads the reader through a understandable "mountain" of technical information with clear and insightful direction. Not only does Doctor Sommersall throughly explain the problem he explains what can be done about it.

If you are interested in the quality of the air you breathe wether it is in public buildings, workplaces, hospitals etc., or more importantly in your own home, then this is a very inexpensive purchase with a large return in clean air.

I remember this future....

There's something inherently sad about child actors. They're called upon to do what older actors have been doing their whole lives, often acting alongside people who know their craft so much better than they do. To match the level of their adult counterparts, they have to work just that much harder, and they still get pigeonholed into fairly flat characters. For a lot of directors, even a poor child actor is good enough to fill out the character that has been created for him or her, so expectations are usually pretty low. In the end, a lot of child actors either burn out or give up.

Wil Wheaton wasn't a bad actor as a kid - anyone who watched Stand By Me can agree on that. He certainly wasn't what he could have become, but as child actors went, he did okay. Perhaps if he had been given the right roles with the right people, he would still be acting today and impressing us with the depth of his talent. As it was, he was on Star Trek: The Next Generation, which sent him down, let us say, a different path.

Wheaton's experience on TNG was one that a lot of the fans (and I count myself among them) seriously under-appreciate. From the age of fourteen, he was given the unenviable role of playing one of the most despised characters in modern science fiction, at least before Jar Jar showed up. In the early heyday of the internet, before liveblogging and Twitter and Facebook, there was Usenet - an early internet discussion group. And one of those early groups was the infamous alt.wesley.crusher.die.die.die. The fans would speak of "The Wesley Crusher Problem" and write horrible fanfiction that would put Ensign Crusher through some of the most depraved torments they could think of. A small, but very vocal segment of the TNG fan base actively hated Wesley and, by extension, Wheaton.

I think he could have easily been forgiven for dropping out of the public eye forever after being treated like that. Fortunately for us, he has chosen otherwise.

With the growth of the Internet, Wheaton has really found his place. He's a tech evangelist and one of the most active bloggers out there, discussing tech, games, family, politics, and whatever else he feels like talking about. He's carved out a space for himself that doesn't rest on his Star Trek credentials, and even if he had never been on the show, he'd still be a fine and upstanding member of the online community.

Surprisingly enough, he does not reject his days as Wesley Crusher, but embraces them. As terrible as it could be sometimes as The Kid - overlooked by writers and directors, hated by fans - he still got to do what most fourteen year-old boys (including this one) can only dream of doing: playing a space explorer on TV. He got to work with a group of fine men and women, and helped to create a show that would be truly beloved around the world. On balance, the good vastly outweighed the bad, and Wheaton was able to fold that experience into his life, making him a better person for it.

Memories of the Future is Wheaton's tribute to his days on Star Trek. As he describes it, the book isn't a salacious tell-all, revealing all of Trek's dirty secrets. It's more like "you're flipping through your high school yearbook with your friends." It's an honest look at the first half of the first season, described only as someone who truly loves it can do: with snark, sarcasm and admiration for the work, but no illusions about when it was... shall we say, less than up to snuff.

It starts with Encounter at Farpoint and goes up to Datalore, covering the first twelve episodes of Season 1 (the summaries of the remaining episodes are forthcoming in volume 2). Each episode is summarized, in a hilarious and sarcastic fashion. True to his geek roots, he manages to work in references to all of the sacred touchstones: Monty Python, collectible card gaming, Dungeons and Dragons, and of course, the other Star franchise which we shall not name. He isn't afraid to call out the writers when they make stupid choices, such as Dr. Crusher asking to bring Wesley onto the bridge during a major diplomatic/security crisis (Code of Honor) or having him casually solve a major plot point that all the experts in the room have been breaking their brains over, and then leave with a snide, "Heh. Adults." (The Battle).

There's quotable dialogue included for each episode, ("Oh, your species is always suffering and dying" - Q, Hide and Q) and Obligatory Technobabble ("Come off the main lead, split off at the force activator, then reversing the power leads through the force activator, repulsor beam powers against Tsiolkovsky!" - Wesley, The Naked Now). There's also a Behind the Scenes Memory, giving us a good look at what it was like for Wheaton to work on the show, often showcasing how little he really knew about what was going on, and a section called The Bottom Line, which looks at each episode in the context of the whole series.

The episode recaps are at once both sentimental and brutally honest. Where there are flaws in the creative process, Wheaton points them out with a kind of rabid glee. Where there are gems of creativity, he shows us where they are as well. It's the kind of look at TNG that could only have been done by someone who was a part of the show and loved it. He writes with clarity and honesty and, just to be sure I point it out again, humor. Lots and lots of humor.

It's a very quick read, and a very enjoyable one. For bonus points, go find the "Memories of the Futurecast" podcast, wherein Wheaton reads selections from the book. It's even funnier than reading it, and is a good way to kill fifteen or twenty minutes. And we podcasters have to stick together, right Wil? You and me, right? Right?

I may be overestimating our camaraderie.

If you're a Trek fan, this book will be a nice visit to a better time. What's more, this will probably make you want to go watch the first season again, if only to see if some of those early episodes are nearly as bad as he's making them out to be. I can't wait for volume 2.

We're finally going to get to see Troi use her Betazoid abilities to tell us something more interesting than "Pain! Pain!" This will be the moment when Troi transitions from useless one dimensional plot device into a real character! What's she going to say?!

You'll laugh and learn a little, too

In 2006 Wil Wheaton was hired to write humorous reviews of Star Trek: The Next Generation for TVSquad. Unfortunately the gig fell through before all the reviews for the first season were published. What's a guy to do? Publish them as a book, of course!

Wheaton brings his own perspective as a cast member and fan of ST:TNG to bear on the episodes, as well as his unique voice as a writer. The result a humorous look back at the rocky beginnings of the show. (The book covers the first half of the first season; since this is marked as "Volume 1," we can assume that future books will cover more episodes.) Each episode gets a synopsis, a piece of notable dialog, some fun technobabble, a behind-the-scenes memory and an overall grade.

Wheaton doesn't pull any punches on either the poor production (writers and directors are particularly in his sights) or his own portrayal of young Wesley Crusher, and his behind-the-scenes memories say a lot about the pressure those involved in show were under to live up to the Original Series. As Wheaton points out, however, his criticism is tempered with great affection, and he is quick to point out the glimpses of brilliance that would come to fruition two seasons later.

One note: this book is definitely NSFW due to language and "adult situations." That aside, it's a fun look back at the early days of what became the greatest sci-fi show of the 90s. I can't recommend it enough to any fan of ST:TNG.

Funny, and brings back my own memories of watching TNG

I NEVER disliked Wesley Crusher. Just thought I'd get that out of the way. I preferred him FAR over Tasha or Troi. I always just accepted his part in the cast as a supporting character and took his presence at face value. I had no idea of all the negative opinions of the Wesley character until well into the 2nd season, and I remember being completely baffled by it and not a little indignant about it on Wil Wheaton's behalf.

I've enjoyed Wil's blog and a several of his other books. He's a very funny and engaging writer and SMART. I'm still a little surprised that he never got a post-graduate degree in engineering or science. He's also especially funny in his too-few appearances as himself in The Big Bang Theory, where even though he's supposed to be "too cool for school," he really fits right in with all those brainiacs. (Note to BBT execs: make Wil a regular character! Or at least bring him in more often.)

But about the book: it's a really quick and easy read, and it's funny with a huge helping of snark. At times, maybe a little too much snark. I understand where he might cringe to see his adolescent self on the screen for jillions of people to see, but his reminiscences are touched with the memories of so many unfortunate and hurtful experiences, both with the stupid-crazy Trek fans AND with some of the people who worked on the show (I should clarify that it was only the production crew that he had problems with, NOT the cast. Thus far I have not read or heard that he had any negative experiences from the other cast members.) None of the bad stories are told here, but I and others who've kept up with him on and off through the years have read enough to know what he's not telling us in the book. None of it was his fault. It was all completely out of his control. As a minor child he was treated poorly and unfairly by the very adults who were supposed to be looking out for him and supporting him. Here it seems as if he's trying to apologize a little for his being there when he has NOTHING to apologize for; he had as much right to be there as any of the other actors and I always enjoyed the too-few Wesley-centered episodes I saw.

Still, unlike myself, HE has long since let that go and he now maintains great warmth and humor as he writes about each of these episodes. I always have had such good memories of the ST:TNG series that I had forgotten some of the truly cringe-worthy episodes that came out of that first season ('Code of Honor' must be the worst 45 minutes of television EVER.) I went back and looked at all the titles of the first season and came up with about 4 or 5 episodes I would be able to enjoy watching again; and really, a couple of my all-time favorite episodes came out of that 1st season. But though there are some really poor quality episodes in the first season, most of them were not really "bad," they just had a little too much lame dialogue and some weak plots. I feel embarrassed on behalf of the cast for some of these episodes, and wonder if at the time they thought the story-lines and plots were as bad as many of the viewers realize these days. If this show had come out NOW and NOT in 1987, it would have barely lasted the usual 13 episodes. But I don't remember having any negative feelings or opinions about it back then; mostly we just thought it was awesome that Trek was getting some updates my generation could identify with and we appreciated that enough to sit through some pretty awkward shows. OTOH, Patrick Stewart was worth watching from the very first scene of the first show, and really rose above some of those lame lines of dialogue. Wil expresses his deep respect for Patrick's talent, and I can share now that, at a Trek convention I went to in the early 90's, I learned that Patrick thought the world of Wil and defended him mightily to an auditorium full of rude and hateful fans. (And it was the appalling behavior in general of that atrocious audience that made me vow to NEVER attend another Trek convention in this city; I was so ashamed just to be among them.)

But I will say this specifically to Wil: I enjoyed your character, I thought you were severely under-used in later seasons in the manner of poor Uhura from TOS, you were treated terribly by the crew, I missed you when you left the show and in "Final Mission," "The First Duty" and "The Game" you proved just how talented you are. When I think of all the cool "Wesley-centered" episodes they could have written for you as you grew older I feel cheated. There are other things I admire about you, but they are unconnected to this book or the show.

Unfortunately, there is only this volume available. It covers only the first half of the first season. It's been 2 years now and there's no indication that we're ever going to get anymore of these stories from him. And I'm really disappointed; I was looking forward to see what he'd have to say about shows like the unintentionally silly and hilarious "Angel One," the excruciating episode "The Child" and later on, favorites like "The First Duty" and "Final Mission," and creepy ones like "The Game" (which I really "heard" more than actually watched on the screen as I spent most it covering eyes.) I'm HOPING he's just busy with acting jobs or maybe other books he wants to finish first. If anyone knows whether there IS going to be a Volume 2 and more, please let me know!

Great Practical Advice

I found the Practitioner's Journey full of really practical advice - advice I can easily act on TODAY! I thought the journey analogy was very cleverly written. Although I'm not a CAM pracitioner (I'm a physiotherapist), I feel the info and examples in this book are extremely relevant to(and a MUST READ for)any health practitioner who owns their own practice. I wish I had have learned the lessons in this book when I was in physiotherapy school - that would have been a huge benefit! Thanks for sharing, Dan and Tara!

An Invaluable Guide

As Dan and Tara put it, every business at some point ends up in a dark cave. (Believe me, this happens!) What the owner should do at this point makes the difference between failure and success, and the authors present a workable plan for all businesses to "get back on the path."

Full of insight, self-reflection, and steps for action

I finished reading The Practitioner's Journey a couple of weeks ago, and it has left me energized and looking at my practice from a very different perspective. As an acupuncturist, I found this to be one of the best books on building a complementary/alternative health care practice available. It addresses the challenges specific to CAM practitioners in a positive and very engaging way. The metaphorical journey of this book is full of insight, self-reflection, and steps for action. The Practitioner's Journey is appropriate for new practitioners trying to build a practice as well as busy ones who are struggling to find balance and avoid burnout. Highly recommended.

About the Author
Known throughout the world at the turn of the century as "Pastor"... Charles Taze Russell was an author, lecturer and minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on February 16, 1852. His authorship of the series, Studies in the Scriptures, included The Divine Plan of the Ages, The Time is At Hand, Thy Kingdom Come, The Battle of Armageddon, The Atonement Between God and Man, The New Creation, plus many others.

His life was totally devoted to teaching the Bible, writing and publishing religious articles, lecturing and proclaiming the message of the blessings which would come to mankind when Christ establishes His Kingdom on earth. He did more than any other man in modern times to establish the faith of the people in the validity of the Holy Scriptures.

His weekly sermons were published by a newspaper syndicate composing some 2000 newspapers with a combined circulation of fifteen million readers. "His writings are said to have greater newspaper circulation every week than those of any living man...." (Editor of the "Continent")

In addition, his missionary tour of Russia, where he delivered lectures to thousands of Orthodox Jews on "the regathering of the Jewish people to Palestine," plus his travels to Japan, China, Korea and India to preach the Good News were widely known. On his return to America he was given a standing ovation at the New York City Hippodrome by thousands of Jews, his discourse on "The Returning Favor to Israel" being published by Hebrew newspapers, both in America and Europe.

Convinced of the harmony of the Bible, Pastor Russell devoted his life to the cause to which he gave his life ... the teaching of the Holy Scriptures. He died while on a lecture tour ... October 31, 1916, leaving no estate whatever. Thus closed the career of a most remarkable Christian.

MANY are Jehovah's agents, and innumerable his agencies, connected with one and another feature of his creation; but back of them all is his own creative wisdom and power. He alone is the Creator, and, as the Scriptures affirm, "All his work is perfect." He may permit evil angels and evil men to pervert and misuse his perfect work; but he assures us that evil shall not for long be permitted to work blight and injury; and that eventually, when he shall restrain and destroy evil, we shall discern that he permitted it only to test, to prove, to refine, to polish and to make his own holiness, gracious character and plan the more resplendent in the sight of all his intelligent creatures.

When in Genesis we read, "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth," we are to remember that this beginning relates not to the universe, but merely to our planet. Then it was that "the morning stars sang together" and all the angelic sons of God "shouted for joy"--when the Lord laid the foundations of the earth and "made the cloud the garment thereof, and thick darkness its swaddling band." (`Job 38:4-11`) But a still earlier beginning is mentioned in the Bible; a beginning before the creation of those angelic sons of God; as we read: "In the beginning was the Word [Logos], and the Logos was with the God and the Logos was a God: the same was in the beginning with the God. All things were made by him, and without him was not anything made that was made." (`John 1:1-3`) (See Series V, Chap. 3.) Since Jehovah himself is from everlasting to everlasting, he had no beginning: the "Only Begotten" has the high distinction above all others of being "The beginning of the! creation of God"--"first-born of every creature." (`Rev. 3:14`; `Col. 1:15`) Other beginnings came in turn as the various angelic orders were one by one created; and these beginnings were in the past, so that their hosts could shout for joy when our earth's creations, related in Genesis, had their beginning.

Examining the Genesis expressions critically, we discern that a distinction is made between the creation of the heaven and the earth (`verse 1`) and the subsequent regulations, or ordering of these, and the further creations of vegetable and animal life. It is these subsequent operations that are described as the divine work of six epochal days. `Verse 2` tells us that in the very beginning of the first day of that creative week the earth was--though without form (order), and void (empty)--waste, empty and dark. This important item should be distinctly noted. If recognized, it at once corroborates the testimony of geology thus far; and, as we shall be obliged to dispute the deductions of geologists on some points, it is well that we promptly acknowledge and dismiss whatever does not need to be contended for in defense of the Bible. The Bible does not say how long a period elapsed between the beginning when God created the heaven and the earth, and the beginning of the creative week used in perfecting it for man: nor do geologists agree amongst themselves as to the period of this interval--a few extremists indulge in wild speculations of millions of years.

Coming, then, to the creative period--the ordering of affairs in our heaven and earth in preparation of the Paradise of God for man's everlasting home--we note that these "days" are nowhere declared to be twenty-four-hour days; and, hence, we are not obliged thus to limit them. We find in the Bible that the word day stands for epoch, or period. The fact that it is most frequently used in reference to a twenty-four-hour period matters nothing, so long as we have the record of "the day of temptation in the wilderness ...forty years" (`Psa. 95:8-10`), and sometimes a "day" or "time" representing a year period (`Num. 14:33,34`; `Ezek. 4:1-8`), and also the Apostle's statement--"A day with the Lord is as a thousand years." (`2 Pet. 3:8`) Most assuredly these epoch-days were not sun days; for the record is that the sun was not visible until the fourth day--the fourth epoch.

We believe our readers will agree that although the length of these epoch-days is not indicated, we will be justified in assuming that they were uniform periods, because of their close identity as members of the one creative week. Hence, if we can gain reasonable proof of the length of one of these days, we will be fully justified in assuming that the others were of the same duration. We do, then, find satisfactory evidence that one of these creative "days" was a period of seven thousand years and, hence, that the entire creative week would be 7,000 x 7 equals 49,000 years. And although this period is infinitesimal when compared with some geological guesses, it is, we believe, quite reasonably ample for the work represented as being accomplished therein--the ordering and filling of the earth, which already "was" in existence, but "without form [order], and void [empty]."

There is no better discussion of true Christianity, and Christian living than found in this volume, and it is helpful for any who wish to truly understand what is expected of them. There are helpful chapters on the proper organization of a congregation, observance of communion, marriage/children, and the true foes of the Christian.

The classic standard guide for English speaking pilgrims

My wife Julie and I used this guide when we walked the Camino de Santiago in 2007. For North American English speaking readers this is probably the best overview guide to use.

Though the guidebook might be a bit outdated, it is easy to read, and it has great information about places to stay.

If you a new to the Camino this is the first guide to consider. If you are an old pro, then I would consider purchasing their maps only guides and using these instead

Read it at home but don't use as a guidebook

This is a well-written book with a lot of interesting information about history, flora & fauna, local culture and cuisine, etc. It is this background information that Davies and Cole excel at. I would recommend reading this book before undertaking the Camino de Santiago, but I would not recommend it as a guidebook to carry with you. I felt like I was "walking blind" with this guide.

The book does not include maps, only very rough sketches with lines before cities. It offers no help in keeping you on the trail, should you lose the waymarkers. The elevation charts likewise are very basic and not very accurate. There is very scant information about albergues and accommodation options, and they are not clearly marked on the sketch "maps".

About the Author
Eugene Arundel Miller is the youngest grandson of Arundel C. Hull, one of the earliest photographers who followed along the route of the Union Pacific Railroad as they raced to build their part of the new transcontinental railroad.

The author inherited Hull's collection of photographs, and as a retired Civil Engineer he was especially interested in the challenge that faced the railroad constructors. With old photographs and maps in hand, he researched and retraced the 1094-mile long original route of the Union Pacific. Along the way he found countless stories of the builders and hangers-on and visited surviving towns and sites of long forgotten ghost towns. Those stories and an extensive outlay of historical photographs have been combined into Miller's Railroad 1869, Along the Historic Union Pacific and the companion book, A Traveler's Guide to Railroad 1869....

While writing Railroad 1869.... Miller made a literary detour to write a biography of Arundel C. Hull, Photographer of the Early West. That in turn led him to investigate the actual origin of many historic photographs resulting in his book Arundel C. Hull, Ghost Photographer for William H. Jackson.

Miller graduated from Colorado State University and Georgia Institute of Technology. His publications include numerous technical articles and several other historical non-fiction articles and books. Miller was raised in Nebraska and now resides in the San Francisco California bay area.

"Railroad 1869: Along the Historic Union Pacific" is a collection of photographs and tales revealing the history of the Union Pacific railroad in the nineteenth century, particularly its eventful construction. Evoking a time when the northwest was wild and lawless, these stories are riveting narratives of men trying to do a tough job against the odds. Intriguing, fascinating, and loaded with vintage black-and-white photographic imagery, "Railroad 1869" is a heartily recommended read for railroad enthusiasts.

Why the high price?

I've just received my copy of this book and have briefly looked through it. The book appears to cover this historic period in depth and is illustrated with many unique photos. My question is, "Why such a high price?" I got my copy for just $19.99, though the book lists for $29.99. The next lowest priced seller is asking well over $100.00. The highest price seller wants over $200.00 for a used copy! I must be missing something, but I'm afraid to really open the book because I don't want to crease the binding and devalue the book. If anyone knows what makes this book so valuable, please let me know.

Leading Book in Country for Retirement Planning

This textbook is the leading textbook in the country in Retirement Planning. It has been adopted by over 50 universities across the country including: Georgetown University, Northwestern University, College for Financial Planning, Duke, UCLA, and Texas Tech. The students at all the school have rated this book as "excellent."

This textbook is generally not available in the most current edition on Amazon or any other re-sale site due to necessity of information to be current with latest tax law. The 4th edition will be available through Money Education in January 2007.

Most of the purchasers keep this text in their professional library as an excellent reference for their practice in financial planning. While we cherish the right for any person to have an opinion, we have serious doubts as to Mr. Valdez's credentials to evaluate either the writing or content of this or any other technical book.

This is a poorly written book with an even poorer test bank. It comes with its own page of corrections and that is only to set the tone for the terrible explanations of a difficult subject. If you want to misguide anyone with confusion and sensless cantor, then perhaps it is a buy.

The 5th edition is basically a draft. There are numerous errors in the book. For example on Page 556: ($2,185+$1,092.5+1092.5+1092.5) somehow yields $5,432.5!? I have a notebook full of corrections are obvious as this.

Turns out many no-names paid $5k apiece to have their articles appear alongside Deepak Chopra's, Wayne Dyer's, etc. "Mentor" Susan Gilbert was ordered to repay Dr. Howard Richmond $2500 for the many telephone coaching sessions she conducted in which she facilitated his participation. He also got a $5k judgment against the publishing company, Mentors Publishing House and Linda Forsythe (Her name was bleeped out - I read his lips.) Writers & readers beware!

La traduccion al Español es muy buena. El libro es claro y conciso acerca de como hacer el Master Cleanse. El autor recomienda comprar el libro Master Cleanse en la primera pagina, asi que no entendia para que leer un libro que me recomienda leer otro libro. Luego de leer el libro completo lo encuentro mas como un acompañte para los 10 dias del proceso. La mayoria del texto es una recompilacion de comentarios del website donde las personas comentan su experiencia en la desintoxicacion. El inicio del libro dice como hacer la limpieza, lo que necesitas y los efectos que puedes sentir. Yo creo que esta descripcion de efectos es lo mas valioso del libro. Mucha suerte y hagamos la limpieza por nuestra salud!!!

I bought the master cleanser before I bought this one, but thinking that this book was going to say more I also bought it later to complement what I had. But not only this book (spanish ed.)was published with sections of pages in upside down! but it just said the same thing, and the guy gives his storie and a blog is also printed just like a chat room.
