I had been studying various aspects of the biology of ticks for about six years, when I moved from a small town into a rural area. I knew from my previous research and reading that my new property was likely to harbor blacklegged (deer) ticks, and I wanted to find out what I could do to protect myself and my family. The research I did ultimately culminated in the writing of this book. What I found out was reassuring; there are many methods available to reduce tick populations. It was also reassuring to learn that new methods of tick control have just come on the market, and that much research is being conducted on ways to reduce the risk of Lyme disease transmission. Hopefully, by applying what I’ve written in this book to your specific situation, you can transform your property into a haven for people and not a habitat for ticks

On Sunday morning, May 18, 1980, the north side of Mt St Helens collapsed in the largest landslide in recorded history. Superheated water flashed to steam, and an enormous explosion roared out behind the crumbling slope. Within a few minutes, the mountain had lost 1,300 feet of its height, thousands of acres were devastated and 57 people were dead.

"Echoes of Fury" traces the lives of eight people who were caught up in the eruption and its aftermath: Don Swanson, a geologist who had persuaded a colleague to take his place at an observation post near the volcano; Roald Reitan and Venus Dergan, two lovers trapped in a mudflow; Donna Parker, whose brother was killed even though he was camped well outside the official danger zone; Andre Stepankowsky, a reporter who helped the Longview Daily News win a Pulitzer for its reporting about the eruption and its aftermath; Peter Frenzen, a graduate student who became the official monument scientist; Robert Rogers, a young daredevil who repeatedly risked his life to explore and photograph the erupting volcano; and Jim Scymanky, a logger whose crew was caught by the volcano's blast.

Parchman's book appears just in time for the 25th anniversary of Mt St Helen's eruption, and it is well worth reading. After briefly telling the story of the volcano's return to life in March 1980, Parchman quickly plunges into the story, describing the eruption and the terrifying events experienced by Scymanky, Reitan, Dergan and Rogers. After explaining what happened on that Sunday morning in 1980, Parchman covers the aftermath--the ash that blanketed eastern Washington, turning day into night; the mudflows that choked the Columbia River and threatened the cities of Kelso and Longview with catastrophic flooding; the lawsuit against the State of Washington and Weyerhaeuser; the devastation of the landscape; the rebirth of the mountain; and the lives forever changed by the loss of loved ones.

This is a gripping story, well told. Mt St Helens is a remarkable place--and, as its recent eruptions of steam and ash remind us, its story is by no means over.

Mount St. Helens revisited - but in what a spectacular way!

To say this first, I am a volcanologist, and I was 18 when Mount St. Helens erupted and I learned of it in the German news. That was not the first time I heard about the volcano - five years earlier, my father had given me a newspaper clipping that said "American volcano threatening to erupt", referring to the first scientific paper (published in the 7 February 1975 issue of the journal Science: [...]) warning of renewed eruptions from this volcano, "perhaps before the end of this [the 20th] century". So, when the volcano exploded on 18 May 1980, I was not exactly surprised. From what I had gathered in nearly a decade of being fascinated by volcanoes, nearly anything could happen at an active volcano.

But through the years, and especially during my college studies, which brought me into the discipline of volcanology, I understood that though warnings had been given, the 18 May 1980 collapse-blast-eruption of Mount St. Helens was an outstanding event in volcanology, one that left a significant mark - in science, but also in the lives of numerous people, and I might dare say even in the lives of people who did not live through it first hand, but were distant observers like myself. I eventually came across publications describing the fate of the victims of Mount St. Helens, those who died, those who survived, and those who lost loved ones in the event. The death toll - officially 57 - was low compared to other volcanic disasters like El Chichón (Mexico, 1982: 2000 killed), Nevado del Ruiz (Colombia, 1985: 23,000 killed) or Pinatubo (Philippines, 1991: about 800 killed).

Certainly, the names of the most famous victims - Harry Truman, David Johnston - were to be found throughout the wealth of publications about the catastrophic 18 May 1980 eruption. A few other names appeared in selected books and reports, but those persons would not grown on you, they remained someone far away and detached from your own life.

Frank Parchman's "Echoes of Fury: The 1980 Eruption of Mount St. Helens and the Lives It Changed Forever", published in 2005, changed all this. Besides re-telling, with remarkable detail and in a nearly flawless manner (from a volcanological standpoint), the full story of the 18 May 1980 catastrophe and all significant eruptive events at the volcano through 2005, it finally brings us in close contact with the victims. Persons who narrowly survived, and the relatives of those who died, arise next to the reader and become amazingly real. My experience is that many pieces somehow floating around in the picture of the Mount St. Helens events for nearly 30 years come together, and the picture becomes not only complete but nearly three-dimensional. With exceptional sensitivity, Parchman guides us through the story of the volcano and the lives it left its stamp on - making us realize that in a very remote and reduced way, it left its signs on many of us.

I have read countless books on volcanoes but also on entirely other subjects, including novels and crime stories. None has so profoundly touched my emotions. I have cried in some movies, and listening to some particular bits of music, but this is the first book ever that made me shed some tears, more than once. And it has done so in particular because it tells a true story that often is more phantastic and incredible than most novels and movies. It does contain a bittersweet love story, but that's not the only touching bit in it. If someone needs to understand what happened at Mount St. Helens in 1980 and during the following nearly 3 decades, this is the best thing to start with.

Utterly engrossing

I found this book fascinating. I had a predisposition to like it in that I recently traveled to the St. Helens area for a wedding and went to the Johnston Ridge Observatory and hiked the nearby trail, returning after the wedding to come in from the opposite direction and hike the Harmony Trail to Spirit Lake and climb the Windy Ridge Observation Point. So I was already into it. At the Johnston Ridge Visitor Center I had seen this book, but thought I would buy it later on Amazon to save some bucks, which I did.
The story weaves together 7 different threads involving 8 people: 1) Don Swanson, the USGS employee who asked David Johnston to take his place at the ill-fated monitoring station on May 18, 1980, 2) Jim Scymanky, one of four loggers working for a Weyerhaeuser subcontractor 13 miles northwest of the mountain on Sunday morning, the 18th, 3) Robert Rogers, a rebel and a risk-taker who violated the red zone prohibition to climb and camp near St. Helens, about 7 miles away on the southern side on May 18, 4) Andre Stepankowsky, a reporter for the Longview, Washington Daily News who flew over the erupting volcano on May 18 and reported on it for the next 20 years, 5) Roald Reitan and Venus Dergan, kids who were barely out of their teens camping and fishing on the Toutle River 30 miles away from the mountain on May18, 6) Peter Frenzen, who was a forestry student at the University of Washington at the time of the eruption, chose Oregon State rather than Yale for grad school to have a chance to study the effects of the eruption, and became the primary scientist for the Mt. St. Helens Monument, and 7) Donna Parker, whose brother Billy was camping with his wife outside the red zone on the morning of May 18. The story covers the events at the time of the eruption, the immediate aftermath, and the effect on the lives of these people for the next 20 years. With the pen of a poor writer, these threads would become jumbled and make for a very bad book. But Mr. Parchman weaves a tapestry with the threads all coming together. He jumps from vignette to vignette, keeping the reader's interest as the story races along. He covers the continuing threat of catastrophic floods to the Longview area, the lawsuit by the relatives of the victims against the state and Weyerhaeuser for their tailoring of the red zone boundaries based on Weyerhaeser's desire to continue logging despite the eruption threat, and the later false claims that the victims were all recklessly within the red zone. In the end, Mr. Parchman succeeds in painting the portrait of not just a stupendous geological event, but of an enormous human tragedy--something that was largely missed in the initial reporting of the event.

I had the pleasure of meeting David Nelson at the Navigator 2007 conference for 911 dispatchers in Las Vegas, his classes were fantastic great man, when I got home I bought this book.!!!(david nelson is one of the authors)
Outstanding ideas for anyone who wants to be a great supervisor. It takes alot more than just telling people what to do and this book will help you with that!! I recommend this book to anyone who is thinking about becoming a supervisor anyone who doesnt want to be like the last supervisor you had!!!

Must Have Been John Austin

This is the first book I have ever purchased on Amazon that I had to return. It seemed to have been written by a man, there was not one scene that did not include some type of phallus. I am a fan of Victorian tales and classic from writers like Jane Austin, this book seemed to be written by someone from modern times trying to speak with the syntax and semantics of Victorian times. I would not recommend this collection to anyone who likes sensual and sexual play between women. There were some scenes with incest and rape. I did not get very far in this book, about the first 5 stories, in an attempt to find something worth my time. I returned the book the very next day after receiving it in the mail.

Take a look at it in a book store before you purchase it to varify my words.

A very bad joke.

Surely this book is a joke; a very bad joke. I am quite familiar with Victorian Literature and am quite familiar with so called lesbian tales of sex and I am quite familiar with the differences in the way women and men write each. This was written by a man, have no doubt! The Pseudo Victorian style was probably put together in the late 1960s or 1970s when such books seemed to be all the craze. As has been pointed out, there is the problem of incest and rape involved in some of the stories. This is a normal "guy thing." I have no doubt that a local yokel frat boy would love this sort of thing, and to be honest, that is just who it was written for. Do not waste your money on this one, nor your time trying to read it. Neither is worth it. A person could take a copy of The Pearl, switch a few words around, and come up with something better than this...what ever it may be. I do not recommend this one and really rather resent the publisher trying to pass this one off as Victorian Lesbian Literature....it is far from it.

Fairly enjoyable but of questionable origin

I seriously question the validity of these stories as real Victorian writing. As another reviewer mentioned, there are no background and bibliographic references whatsoever. I would at least expect approximate dates and publishers of the original texts.

My guess is that they were written by a man familiar with Victorian erotica, but some time after the era ended. One clue is that one story describes the woman as a "lesbian," a word which didn't come into popular use until well after the Victorian era. Sexologists began using it in 1889, but it is really doubtful that a writer of common porn would be aware of the most recently published scientific writing.

On the other hand, the stories are entertaining as some ridiculous little pieces of erotica.

About the Author
Dr. Sweeney is a Fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine. He is the author of THE ALCOHOL BLACKOUT: Walking, Talking, Unconscious & Lethal. Published in 2004, it was and is the first book ever published on the subject. His new book, Cries From the Abyss, is a companion or supplemental book to the first. Informative and persuasive

Blackouts as a result of consuming alcohol for some people can mean destructive and sometimes deadly results to those experiencing the blackout as they are almost always unaware of what it happening. Sound frightening? It is for those who suffer from the blackouts and for those who live with them. Author Donal Sweeny, M.D. previously wrote The Alcohol Blackout: Walking, Talking, Unconscious & Lethal in which he invited readers to submit their blackout experiences. In this book author, Donal F. Sweeney explains to readers what a blackout is and the misconceptions associated with blackout such as heavy drinking when as he explains and as told through peoples stories, that some people experience blackouts on two glasses of wine. Throughout this addresses the many questions society and the criminal justice system has about blackouts and the sometime bizarre behaviors and acts. In the last two chapters, he discusses the issue about what can be done to encourage governmental agencies to recognize and study blackout and includes a listing of actions people can take to minimize the effects of blackouts on their own lives. In the final chapter- The Last Word, Dr. Sweeney provides concise tips on drinking to avoid blackouts; how to recognize them; what to do it one occurs; what to teach your children. Dr. Sweeny is still warming of the dangers of blackouts and decrying the neglect of them, however, he now has the voice, often-desperate voices as the Cries from the Abyss are informative and persuasive indeed. Highly recommended for anyone who works with children and adults, the criminal justice systems including forensics and law enforcement, public health, and parents or children of alcoholics, or alcoholics themselves who wish to understand more about blackouts.

I found the book to be very repetitive. I could only read several chapters then had to put it down. It was nothing I already didn't know and was disappointed that I spent the money on the book.

Great Find!

Just moved back to Santa Barbara after living in LA for fifteen years and wanted a quick read that would bring me up to date on what's been happening around town. This was a GREAT find - current, thorough and really interesting. Full of tips on what to see and do, where to eat, shop, explore, etc., but also intriguing (and often amusing) background info on local people and places. And fun to read, too, like sitting down to pick the brain of a good friend who's got the inside scoop on everything. I ended up buying several for Christmas gifts for people who've lived here most of their lives and who I know don't know half of what's in this book.

Every year I buy one or more of Jeanne Carley's calendars. They are unique and so adorable. Nothing compares. Even though my last ferret passed on, I continue the ferret calendar tradition.

Jeanne Carley always produces the funniest, most adorably photographed calendars. Of course you need to know and love ferrets. Some folks just don't get them. "Are they mean?" (N0)! "Do they bite?" (no more than a young kitten). "Do they smell?" (NO, not if neutered, AND They use a litter box)

Anyway- if you enjoy these clever and furry little critters, this is a must-have.

The Queen Bees Quilters are at it again

A really good cozy mystery series that takes place in a small quaint town in Kansas. Picasso has opened a gourmet restaurant in this unusual setting and the townsfolk are loving it. Po and her gang of quilters are fans of Picasso's. A plump, little man with a gorgeous wife. His wife Laurel is found dead in the water and they're not sure if she slipped or it was foul play.....you figure it out. So the sleuthing begins. With all the quaint shops, the loveable characters and a good mystery, you will find this another charming book in the series.

Quilters piece together clues

I enjoyed reading the second book on the Queen Bee Quilters. This one wasn't quite as complex as the first one, but all of the quilters are so genuine. This Quilt Bee reminds me of real quilting bees, the members are diverse, their preferences for techniques, fabrics, and colors are very different, and, of course their approach to projects vary depending on their way of starting new quilts. Our own little bee is so similar in many ways, and although every member is unique, we have so much life we have shared together that we are very close.
