About the Author
William J. O’Hern, or Jay, as he is known to his friends, has enjoyed the Adirondacks for as long as he can remember. Early in life he enjoyed summers at his grandparents’ cabin and camping trips with his family. As a young man he explored the wilderness on extended backpacking adventures to historic locations and mountain summits. Along the way he became a "Forty-Sixer." Later in life Jay took up his pen to further explore the region he loved so much. Adirondack Characters and Campfire Yarns is Jay’s third book about the Adirondack mountains, their rich history, and the people who made them their home.

This Book Covers It All!

I have skimmed through many How-To books but this is the first one that I have taken seriously and read from beginning to end. It is like a "textual map" as it walks you through the how-to book creation and writing process, step-by-step.

You should not have to look any further than this book for "hands-on" instructions on this subject. I especially liked the "learning points summary" that sets the stage for the remainder of the book. It then delves into each point summarized and walks you through every one from beginning to end; giving any prospective how-to writer all the tools they will ever need to write their book.

This book has so much going for it I think it could easily be part of an MBA program. The author knows how to communicate directly with his readers in a warm and friendly way; there is no hype and nothing is taken for granted. He has put together a complete arsenal of "How-To" book writing material.

After reading and working through this book, no one should ever suffer from writers block. In my opinion, this is a "How-To" masterpiece!

Looks like a book, but really isn't!

This self published "book" is really a long, highly repetitive, motivational speech on paper. It does contain some useful information about internet searches when writing titles which will catch the attention of folk hunting on the internet, but is replete with gramatical constructions which no standard publisher would (or should) allow. If you want to know how to publish your own e-material, and don't care about whether it could pass muster in the standard publishing world, this "book" will tell you how. But be aware, you will be degrading the publishing industry if you follow his lead and publish anything that looks like his.

Did make me rewrite my first book in a better format and my second book is well on it way to being finish.

Excellent study aid

Nothing beats flash cards for memorization, and a lot of memorization is required for the PMP exam. These cards also have the knowledge areas printed on them, which makes it easier to sort them for focused study on a particular area.

Note that some of the process cards list "key" inputs, tools, and outputs. "Key" means they're doing you a favor and helping you focus on the stuff you are most likely to be tested on. I was annoyed by this at first, but came to see the value of these focused lists for study purposes.

Great study aid

I'm a big fan of flashcards for learning and was pleasantly surprised when this pack arrived and thunked satisfyingly on my desk. It contains 250 cards, all of which provide very near definitions and bits of information necessary for prepping for the PMP exam. I've taken some online courses for the subject and none of them have provided information so easily assimilated as I have found with these cards. Because the pack is so large it's a little difficult to hold the entire thing in your hands for reviewing the information. If you want to shuffle the deck, plan to do it in stages. Obviously that's not much of a negative.

Endearing rather than enduring

Richard Lamb's manuscript on Naples was completed just before he died in 1999. All the information in this book, therefore, is somewhat dated. This is not critical, because the book itself contains few of the hotel or restaurant recommendations that fill most travel guides. Rather, it is an idiosyncratic collection of anecdotes and observations about various churches, museums, and ruins scattered around Campania. It may be true that few tourists ever see all of these sites, but most tourists see many of them: Mr. Lamb did not venture far off the beaten track. But he wrote well, gathered obscure facts, and penned a guide that--while no substitute for Lonely Planet or Frommer's--makes an entertaining breakfast read.

Terrific guidebook-- funny and smart.

Excellent guide for the English-speaker walking the Spanish Camino. Davies and Cole balance wealth of information with the obvious weight restrictions to come up with a book which was helpful, interesting, and often very funny. The remarks about the towns and the available Auberges were so helpful that pilgrims of other nationalities walking the camino at the same time as I would often make a point of asking me what my book said about what they could expect in the day ahead.

I also appreciated the advice on the special things to do and see. The Best of the Camino list was right on target and we were very pleased on the occasions when we took this "best of" advice.

As the book was written in 2003 and a great deal was changed on the Camino for the Jamesian Year in 2004, I recommend annotating your copy with updates which can be found at the publisher web site.

The best of self publishing

This travel or walking guide to the "Camino de Santiago" represents the best of small publishers or self publishing. The author and her husband researched the area by walking the Camino several-times - developing good and valid information.

Bethan did a good job on a "shoe string" {probably a broken shoe string} budget. As a small business owner I am impressed with Bethan's ability to develop a small business {in a foriegn country} and than to produce a good product/Book.

As a treker and walker I also appreciate the small size and light weight of the book.

Still Excellent - leaner, improved 2nd edition with better maps, updated accomodations

This 2006 new edition of Walking the Camino de Santiago is now 7 ounces and 182 pages easy to read, fact filled guide with sketch maps, elevation profiles, and something about the history, and the flora and fauna of the trail. It covers the trail from St. Jean-Pied-de-Port near the French border to Santiago de Compostela and on to Finisterre.

Walking the Camino de Santiago is a route oriented guide. It does have information on where to stay, but most of the text is still on what happens in between places to stay. You get a flavor of recent and ancient history as well as current conditions.

The original sketch maps have been augmented with more comments, symbols showing vegetation, revised symbols - overall easier to look at. The accomodation list has been updated, so for the moment is reliable. Refugios appear and disappear, so in 2007 and beyond you will still need to supplement this with more current information, either from the internet or the current Confraternity of St. James guide below.

When walking the Camino, the mandatory guide for English speakers is the Confraternity of St. James Pilgrim Guides to Spain I. The Camino Frances. This is a barebones 76 page guide focused on pilgrim food and shelter - how far is it, how many beds available, what does it cost. A very brief guide is the Camino chapter out of the Lonely Planet's Walking guide to Spain - about 35 pages.

I definitely recommend Walking the Camino de Santiago for anyone starting at St. Jean or in Spain. I still say that getting the current confraternity guide is mandatory, because it gives you a great level of comfort about how far, what to expect, and cost of the next place with food and/or shelter.

If a pilgrim starts in Le Puy en Velay, then Alison Raju's the Way of St. James: Le Puy to the Pyrenees would have to be used until you reach St. Jean. It is a more terse, difficult to read guide than the Davies and Cole guide.

We had a difficult time finding information on the Camino before doing it in 2001. Now there is a lot of info on the web - just check the online forums of gocamino or santiagobis or google for camino santiago, or even backpack45 and you will get a wealth of information.

When it comes to what guides to carry, my recommendations have not changed. Always carry the Confraternity guide and either this guide (Davies and Cole) or the John Brierley guide. For before the trip reading, the large Gitlitz and Davidson's The Pilgrimage Road to Santiago gives you more than you may want to read on the history of the route. Also read some of the personal experience books such as Susan Alcorn's Camino Chronicle: Walking to Santiago, or Joyce Rupp's Walk in a Relaxed Manner: Life Lessons from the Camino.

Waste of money

I have several raw books and I only eat raw. This book was a real waste of money. The recipes were so simple (and many were untasty) that they were rediculous. For example: "Instant Veggie Soup" consisted of 2 c. tomatoes, 2/3 c. pineapple, 2 c. spinach and 3 stalks of celery. Mix and eat. Anyone can throw a bunch of fruits and vegetables together, but in raw cooking you need to make sure they taste good together. My favorite "fast food" raw book is "Raw Foods for Busy People" by Jordan Maerin. The recipes are simple AND delicious!

Not the Best

This book was a disappointment. Yes, the recipes are simple, but they're pretty bland. Many of them use the same or similar ingredients, so a lot of the dishes taste the same; there isn't much variety. The most interesting recipes in this book came from other chefs, and even they weren't very good. Of all the recipes, I use only three: Roquette Me Soup, Avocado Mayo, and Submarine Rolls (which I modified and, I think, improved). I would not recommend this book for someone who's just starting on raw foods. Instead, try "The Raw Food Detox Diet," with "Raw Foods for Busy People" as a complement.

A sweet book for little ones.

Looking for a simple but engaging book for little ones in preschool and kindergarten? This is it. Perfect for your "Back to the Beach" spring unit and for reading at circle time. It can also be a nice springboard to other counting activities.
I liked it a lot.

Baratunde R. Thurston is one of the hottest emerging young comics in New England. He is the creator of the popular humor e-zine NewsPhlash. His writings have appeared in The Boston Metro, The Harvard Crimson, ModernHumorist.com and blackpeopleloveus.com, and he hosts an AM radio talk show. Baratunde lives in Cambridge, Mass.

Thurston takes shots at everything from spam to foreign affairs to afro-touching. His humor is sharp, and smart. I spent most of my time with this book laughing out loud. Looking forward to more work from this guy...

Ok, I may be a bit biased in being one of Baratunde's comedy cohorts in the up and coming Boston comedy scene, but this book is absolutely a hilarious hoot in political and pop culture satire. If you are a fan of Jon Stewart's "The Daily Show" on Comedy Central, you'll love Baratunde's sharp yet playful style of humor aimed at boy bands, politicans, political debates, and technology. Although the format of the book is not traditional due to it's late night news format which may throw you off at times, it definitely keeps you on your toes with it's humor on many subjects. It HAS an edge to it as well, while not being too preachy on one side or the other. My personal favorite pieces are his frustration at white people's fascination with touching his afro and Newsphlash's "interviews" with the boy band, "O-Town" and USAG John Ashcroft. So if you are part of the one thrid, a this is a highly recommended book!
