A science fiction explanation about how the world could be created in 7 days

This book made my head hurt. But, it was interesting, so I kept reading. This book is about a bunch of kids at "Planet Academy" who are in charge of creating the Earth.

The biggest thing that bugged me about this book is the same thing that bugs me about The Sims. You know how in The Sims, it takes you 2 hours to go to the bathroom, and sometimes it's just more time effective to wet yourself in your living room and then go take a shower? The Sims just isn't a realistic simulation of life, and this book just doesn't have its "Universe" held together very cohesively.

For instance, how many people are in Planet Academy? Each team is assigned a name of a common color (pink, blue, green), and there are 4 people per team. So assuming there are no more than 10 common colors, there would be about 40 people in Planet Academy. The auditorium that they gather in for class seemed to hold about 300-500 people though. And, these people in Planet Academy are supposed to be the spirit population of Earth, so there really should be about 15-30 billion of them.

But the thing that bugged me most was how time just didn't add up in this book. The bad team were able to get to the planet, finish their assignment, and come back to torment the good team, while the good team had a 10-minute conversation in the classroom. 10 minutes just isn't enough for any kind of round trip interplanetary travel, even if you can go the speed of light.

This was also obviously a science-fiction version of the Mormon story of premortal life, but the names were changes just slightly. This is probably to avoid any hint at blasphemy, but I would have liked it better if the book just came out and said what things were, since it's obvious what the story's about. Here's a list of the changed names:
*The Great Commander = God
*Prince Shepard = Jesus, the Good Shepherd
*Luciel = Lucifer
*Cryptons = 1/3 of hosts of heaven that were led astray
*Celestium core = Earth's spirit
*Grand Council = Council in Heaven
*Sage = Adam
*Diamond = Eve
*Hospital = The temple
*Stage 1-6: Days 1-6 of creation
*Planet Academy: Pre-Earth life
*Being University: Earth life

Pros:
+It's a very short book, only about 110 pages of book.
+It's a fun, interesting read. I kept turning the pages to find out what happens next
+Faith-promoting Mormon fiction

Cons:
-Space travel in this isn't very well thought out. Every solar system in this book takes about fifteen minutes to get to, and they supposedly travel at exactly the speed of light. So, maybe they're in the center of the galaxy, where stars are much closer together. But Earth gets moved into its solar system
-The number of people in this Academy didn't add up

Good Sound Teaching

This book appears to be more evidence that the Lord seems to be dragging some us kicking and screaming into the reality of the very JEWISH foundation of what we have called Christianity. Leman and other teachers like him are helping us along with the realization. Thank you!! Some of us are now in a wilderness limbo of sorts between having left the Hellenistic Christian belief system, and not knowing where to go from here. It is just so Biblical to wander and wonder. For me, it is actually enjoyable. We seem to have a new class of misfits with no name, no organization. I recommend this book very highly, especially for all those who ever sat very still on a Sunday morning, staring at the back of someone's head, and wondering, "Is this all there is?"

Michael Collins Piper has gone beyond the investigative skills and research acumen of such notables as Michael Moore in exposing the global elite who control this nation and who are pushing for a "New World Order", where the ordinary citizens will be relegated to serfdom. It is a must read for American patriots who are disillusioned with the empty promises of politicians and are frustrated to see the U.S. Constitution being subverted by elements loyal to foreign interests. It is comprehensible and well referenced by a distinguisehed reporter and investigator who is concerned strictly with the facts rather than the subjective theatrics we see in the popular media that passes for news. Once you start reading the book, you may find it difficult to put it down until you finish.

Michael Collins Piper should be nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for this scholarly work. Unfortunately, the mainstream media are too intimidated by "special interest forces" to invite such individuals for honest and open discussions on the drive towards a global domination based on Pax Americana. Should be a free CD. Not much here but a sales pitch for going to her conference. I like what she teaches but no way this is worth the money I spent on it. This leaves a bad tates in my mouth and not wanting to attend her conference.

10 STARS FOR THE BEST DREAM BOOK OUT THERE!

I have dreams that cannot be explained by other books. I lucid dream, have talked to Spirits as a result of this books first half's guidance. All My life I have had dreams that guided me through the hardest times of my life, some were confusing and repeated themselves over the years. One such dream let me know my sleep apnea was going to get the best of me. This book, which I have had since it was first on the book shelves, very well may have saved my life. ...Not every book will give you the exact meanings that you mind uses to let you know about things going on in your life, not even this one. BUT! it is the very first book to be 99% right on for me. You must remember dream books are mearly guides which can guide US into a deeper understanding of what we cannot see or what decide to ignore. Our minds choose images we identify with and it is up to us to decide what they truly mean. Wolf, for me, means protection where as most books will use the Red Ridding Hood thery because we grew up with the big bad wolf image thanks to the blindness of the writer of that story... This book chooses this also. The other parts of this book have been my only choosen guide for many years and I have learned waaaay more from this book than the countless other dream books I have bought over the years and I recomend this book above all others. read the first part of this book and keep notes for yourself. Be determined to remember your dreams. Keep a notebook by you bedside along with this book and you will find you way through the confusing parts of you life and be better for it. (of course this is just one dreamer's opinion)

NOT A BETTER BOOK ANYWHERE ON DREAMS

This book taught me how to lucid dream and opened up a new world to me. I have always had dreams that have guided me in this life but sometimes they were confusing and left me wondering "why in the world I would dream that??" I keep a journal and was able to go back through it and understand why some dreams repeated themselves thanks to this book... It is true that only the dreamer can truly interpet their own dreams but this book was very insightful and helped me to move on from repeated dreams. The only thing I found I did not like was what it said about "wolves" I am part Native and Wolves to me mean Protection not the big bad wolf theroy of little Ridding hood. Most people see Wolves this way because of this story so the mind stored this image and used it in this way. Not the books fault but the person who write the story which left an impression on our young minds.

If you use the back of the book to look up images you will find them most of the time instead of looking for them in A-B-C order.

There is so much more to this book than just the symbols and it IS A WORTHWILE READ! The person who left a negative feedback must have been thinking it was something completely different and did not understand dreaming.

Best book, by far, of any dream book

I have been using this book since 1991, the fifth printing. Time and again, this book has proven itself to be the best. It teaches you how to look for your own dream symbols, and thereby, making your interpretation richer and specific to your life. Dreams can help your relationships, help you problem-solve, and even entertain you. I've used several other books over the years, because no book can cover every image/symbol in dreams, but more often than not, this is the one I reach for first and last. I've been interpreting dreams since I was 17, more than 32 years now. I'm buying another copy, just so I have a replacement for my old battered copy.

About the Author
Lee Gurga was born and raised in Chicago, and currently lives in Lincoln, Illinois with wife Jan, sons Ben, A.J., and Alex, dog Fay, and five haflinger horses. He first became interested in haiku in 1966, but he did not start publishing until 1987. He was soon receiving awards for his haiku, and High/Coo Press published his first collection, a mouse pours out, in 1988. In 1992 he was co-editor of Midwest Haiku Anthology (with Randy Brooks). Gurga has received first place in a number of haiku competitions. In 1998 he was honored with an Illinois Arts Council Poetry Fellowship for his work in haiku. He is currently associate editor of Modern Haiku, the longest-running journal of haiku and haiku studies in English.

An active member of the Haiku Society of America, he served as Vice-president in 1991 and again in 1995-96, and served as President in 1997. As a leader of HSA he was instrumental in organizing an International Haiku Conference in Chicago in 1995, and in 1997 he led a delegation of prominent English language haiku poets and editors to the second Joint Conference in Tokyo.

He is currently editor of Modern Haiku, the longest-running journal of haiku and haiku studies in English . He is also poetry editor for Illinois Times and haiku columnist for Solares Hill newspaper (Key West, Florida).

This is a very informative book about haiku -- what it is and what it is not.

The author's writing is unambiguous and insightful.

He places examples of failed haiku beside successful ones to illustrate the difficulties and subtleties of technique.

I was very pleased to find a point addressed that I had always wondered about concerning whether it is better to use the present-tense or participle form for verbs in haiku -- or whether it matters at all.

A haiku almost always will present a moment in the present. That means that the verbs used are likely to be in the form of either the simple present-tense (e.g. runs, paints, fishes, etc.) or participle (e.g. running, painting, fishing, etc).

Well, apparently there is no set rule about which to use, but here is an example of what the use of the participle will allow:

One of my own (not necessarily good) haiku used as an example:

a garden pond
drawing the moon out
from behind a cloud

The use of drawing allows that it can be read as any of these: "a garden pond [is] drawing" or "...[was] drawing," or even "...[will be] drawing."
Using the participial form provides the haiku with a versatility or flexibility with regard to the dimension of time.

Here's what it would be using the simple present tense form:

a garden pond
draws the moon out
from behind a cloud

The versatility that the participle provided is gone, but it also may be true that this version rings more pleasurably to the ear.

Well, anyway he speaks about that in his book and I just appreciated that he addressed that point; no other haiku book that I have ever read had ever done so.

Fabulous Book.A Real Bargain!

This book is one the best I have ever bought and that is saying a lot because i buy approximately one book a week. It is direct to the point and chock full of information from beginning to end. how I spent my Himayalan vacation.......

This book is a record with commentary of the author's spiritual adventures at a retreat in Dharamsala, India, home-in-exile to the Dalai Lama of Tibet. I read the paperback edition.

The author, David Komito, is a colleague of mine in the "lofty halls of academia," and I was curious about the book more for a deeper personal look into his psyche than for professional reasons. David wrote another book, "Nagarjuna's Seventy Stanzas: A Buddhist Psychology of Emptiness," which was listed in the bibliography of the Dalai Lama's book, "The Meaning Of Life," and is highly regarded in Buddhist circles. David's doctorate is in Central Asian studies, and he teaches at the university level and at a Zen Center in San Francisco. He has worked with such luminaries as Bob Thurman (whose daughter, Uma, you may have seen), and recounts a few relevant stories about the rest of his career in the book.

Most of the book concerns a seven month retreat David and his wife, Kay, took in Dharamsala after the death of their lama, or spiritual teacher, Tara Tulku Kensur Rinpoche. He describes in wonderful detail the circumstances of taking the retreat, the location and conditions in which they lived, the interactions with the lamas and other Tibetans in exile there, and the spiritual work he and Kay did under the guidance of the lamas at Dharamsala. He also describes their audiences with the Dalai Lama. There are a few pictures in the book, including some of Kay's impressive artwork. Unfortunately, black and white photos cannot do justice to some of the subjects. Still, the images are quite welcome.

I found it to be a marvelous book, full of warmth, insight, and weighty spiritual matters, with bits of humor here and there. David is amazingly honest about his thoughts, feelings, and the process he goes through as he tries to reconcile his modern persona with ancient wisdom teachings. It reminded me somewhat of Castenada's Don Juan series, although I found David to be far more receptive and open to exploring the teachings than Castenada, who always seemed very resistant to the process.

This is not a book for beginners curious about Buddhism. This is a book for serious students who are striving to practice this path. While others could gain from reading it as a sort of spiritual or personal adventure, the book is somewhat academic in tone and depth at times. When David goes into detail about the practices, philosophy, and terminology, it requires one to be reasonably familiar with this form of Buddhism. Terms are not explained or simplified for the general reader.

While certainly not an expert on the subject, I have studied enough to be comfortable with the subject matter. I found some strong similarities with other spiritual paths I have explored, particularly Taoism and Hermetic magick. (Two past lives in Tibet also help, although few people will take that seriously.)

David is rather modest about this (and his other) book. I found it a very interesting and engaging read, although slow at times because of the detail and terminology, which I did not want to skip over or rush through. There are many places where David shares important teachings well worth the extra time. His experiences with, and insights into, the practices are also helpful.

I recommend this book for anyone walking the Tibetan Buddhist path, or those whose spiritual, academic, or personal interest would lead them in this direction. It is a good book.
