About the Author
Douglas Penick graduated from Princeton University, was a research associate at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and at The Institute for Architecture and Urban Studies, and a chef at Gordon Matta Clark’s Food. He studied and practiced Tibetan Buddhism for more than 35 years, and has written and taught on Tibetan, Chinese, Japanese, and Indian religion, history and culture. He wrote the National Film Board of Canada’s prize winning two part series on the Tibetan Book of the Dead (Leonard Cohen, narrator) and the libretti for two operas: King Gesar (Sony CD w/ Ma, Serkin, Ax et. al.) and Ashoka’s Dream (Santa Fe Opera) with composer, Peter Lieberson. His short fiction, essays and poetry have appeared in Bombay Gin, The Shambhala Sun, Parabola, Porte Des Singes, Cahiers de L'Herne, Publishers Weekly, Agni. BODY, Corvus, Danse Macabre Hyperallergic, Descant, Regnum Sacrum and elsewhere.He is the author of two other books deriving from the epic cycle on the life of King Gesar of Ling, and his novel about the 3rd Ming Emperor, JOURNEY OF THE NORTH STAR was brought out by Publerati in 2012. DREAMERS AND THEIR SHADOWS, a tale of a mythical teacher and those he influenced across time will be published this year.

I have read this book four times since purchasing it, each time I read it more beauty and wisdom is revealed. The third time i read it I did so aloud which really makes it come alive, if I had a better voice i would sing it. Really that is how it would be done in the tradition of Gesar. Douglas Penick it seems is a true Gesar singer just like in the tradition in the Himalayas. It is extremely well written and the poems or verse songs are really very evocative, beautiful and inspiring. I have typed out some of the supplications and read them daily. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in buddhist spirituality and history of the Himalayas. I know some poeple might say this is all legends but you will not find many of them among the population of that rather large diverse area. I recommend this book very highly. David Warren

A remarkable achievement!

Crossings on a Bridge of Dreams is outstanding for its literary qualities. What may be less apparent is the way in which Penick has maintained traditional Asian genres and topoi while simultaneously transforming them into contemporary vehicles of expression. Indeed, I would say that in these ways his work represents an authentic continuation of the Gesar saga, not a "retelling" for modern audiences. To take just one example, his accounts of nomad politics and society perfectly capture the warrior spirit of Gesar. What Penick has added is an emotional realism hidden in those texts, which he makes available to a modern audience in provocative ways. A remarkable achievement!
