Clueless George; A Great Satire!

Clueless George is a wonderful satire on several levels. Of course, it satirizes the Curious George books, as well as George Bush, Dick Cheney and others. It does this with a well written little story and wonderful drawings. George (as a monkey) dressed up on the carrier deck for "Mission Accomplished" was almost worth the price of the book alone.

The first book of the series, "Clueless George Goes to War" is a humorous look at how the war in Iraq is being prosecuted and how we wound up there in the first place. The drawings are detailed and need to be viewed several times before their full impact will hit.

This is the smallest and quickest of the books. Although I think was great, don't read this if you are a Bush fan. If, however, you are a reasonable human with a funny bone, then these little books are a must. They are a little expensive for what you get, so I would recommend either getting it either used, from a library (as if that is likely) or by buying the three book set on sale here on Amazon.

OH! I cannot stop laughing, but maybe I should be crying? This is a wonderful comment on our Prez and his master, "The Man." A group of us read it aloud until we were all gasping with laughter and unable to speak. Then we fought over it to finish reading it to ourselves.

This is a very good book

Ray Crawford does an excellent job of explaining locations to put in, the value in fishing a particular area, tidal conditions when fishing is optimal (when known), and potential problems. I have several other books on fishing the Texas coast, and this is the best for the coastal bend area. When Crawford's recommendations are based on evaluations by others rather than his personal experience, he explains that. I used this book along with my other references on a recent fishing trip to Copano Bay, and Lighthouse Lakes, and it was extremely useful in selecting fishing locations under the existing conditions.

Excellent book

I have all of Ray's books and keep a copy of each under the back seat of my truck. With wade fishing and kayak fishing, wind direction can make or break a trip. Ray's books show hundreds of places to fish, to park, to launch a kayak. The books provide many maps to show these places. If the wind changes direction, it is a simple matter to grab the book and relocate.

I have fished the Texas coast for over 50 years and his books show many places I didn't even know existed. With fuel costs what they are, his books pay for themselves because of the maps and commentary on fishing areas.

About the Author

Professor Walsh is currently the Hamilton Kuhn Professor of Biological Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology at Harvard Medical School. He is one of the leading enzymologists in the world. He has elucidated the catalytic mechanisms of a wide variety of enzymes including flavoproteins and other redox enzymes. He has also pioneered the design of mechanism-based enzyme inhibitors (or "suicide" substrates). His work has found practical application in the design of antibacterial agents, anticonvulsive agents, plant growth regulators, and antitumor drugs. His current focus is on the biosynthesis and mechanism of action of antibiotics and bacterial siderophores. He has published over 600 scientific articles and his book, Enzymatic Reaction Mechanisms, has educated generations of enzymologists.

Suspense author and professor of Italian Terpening (League of Shadows; Tropic of Fear) gets his latest book off to a slam-bang start in Rome with a botched heist by terrorists. During the robbery, a visiting American professor is wounded and his daughter kidnapped, possibly for ransom. The time is 1988, and competing government security organizations are preparing to welcome both the Soviet premier and the U.S. president. Terpening's complex plot revolves around the wounded professor's attempts to find his child while he is unknowingly trapped in an assassination scheme involving rogue CIA agents, venal U.S. executives, Soviet oligarchs, and corrupt Italian security officials. The reader roots for a weary Italian security officer to do his job better than the villains do theirs. The author's research is evidently extensive, the writing competent, the suspense gripping, and the characterization of beastly adversaries and noble protagonists effective. The sense of place is bolstered with such an abundance of native vocabulary and street and building names that Italophiles will feel right at home. Nine days in October - Ron Terpening

I am an avid reader and yet I have been dragging my feet reading this book. I am still at 15% of it and nothing about it makes me want to turn the page. When I purchased it I didn't realize the story took place in Italy. Strange coincidence, since I am Italian. Thank goodness I can understand the many (too many!) Italian words lining every page of the book. I can only imagine how aggravated I would be if I didn't understand them! At first I thought it was kind of fun, but my amusement quickly turned into annoyance and boredom. Too many names and acronyms and nothing to grip me to the storyline. Waaaaayyy tooooo slowwww and impersonal... I don't know if I can finish it. I just can't get into it at all. A bust so far...
I want to add to my review because I finally forced myself to finish the book. I found it to be quite a task. I dragged my feet the whole way and found it very, very boring. It picked up in a couple of places toward the end, but it was not enough to change my opinion of it. I got the impression that it was more of a way for the author to display his knowledge of the Italian language and political situation than a compelling story for the reader. Also, there were way too many names thrown constantly around and not refreshed for the mind of the reader, very disconnected.

Splendid international thriller

NINE DAYS IN OCTOBER is nine days in hell, one fast-paced thriller set in amorous, corrupt Italy, a book you can't put down no matter that it's 3 a.m. and giving you only three more hours of reading time. A masterpiece of international intgrigue and espionage le Carre and Jack Higgins readers will love. Terpening is a maestro of plot and character development in all his wonderful thrillers, especially so in NINE DAYS. His knowledge of Italy and its people, countryside and political history is nothing short of complete. Highly recommended.

I really enjoyed this novel. The author has an original voice and is very skilled at writing suspense. Character are all so vivid and memorable. I look forward to reading more by Mr. Terpening!

A TRUE GRIMOIRE OF THE TAROT MAJOR ARCANA !!!

This is so much more than a book. This is in fact a grimoire of the essence of Tarot-sophy. This may seem quite a claim but this is quite a work of Art! Truly MUST be seen and read by serious (and I would suggest ADVANCED) Tarotmancers. This present reviewer is what some people call a Tarot Master; not by virtue of some group, online course, weekend workshop or what have you, but simply from around 30 some years of experience with Tarot and the Occult (solitary and with like-minded others) and collecting various Tarot and cartomancy decks (now have around 50 of specially selected decks). I came across this book and it's related deck by accident when browsing amazon. I happened to discover the visionary work of Leigh J. McCloskey (actor, artist, philosopher) in a very tangential way I won't explain here... but I am so glad I did! I recommend this book very highly.

First, the book itself is an oversized paperback (there appears to be a hardcover edition available too, but this review is for the 2003 paperback edition). It is of excellent print and paper quality. One minor quibble would be the paperback's cover tends to curl a bit after one has been leafing through (and believe me, you WILL be leafing through ! Over & over again !) but I'll just have to place it in the bookshelf now and then to press the cover down. This is an Art Book on a few levels. Size-wise it's like a coffee table sized book. It is hefty in weight as well as in mystical / magickal / philosophical content, over 295 pages. The artist-philosopher has truly "re-visioned" the major arcana of the Tarot in 22 beautiful, mystical black & white illustrations which are here reproduced together in the front of the book, the nearly full page illustration allows the viewer to soak in every minute detail. The 22 chapters, one for each of the major arcana, also reproduces the illustration, again as full page, for the reader as they progress through the work. The cover is without title or name and it is beautiful with a painting by the artist-writer Leigh J. McCloskey. The title and author's name appear on the spine. This appears to be privately printed through the Olandar Press LTD, a publishing arm of the artist-writer's work.

Traditional Tarotmancers who seek beyond Tarot's uses as a divination tool into it's deeper Esoteric / Occult meaning will appreciate this book and find much to absorb here. Mr.McCloskey has clearly done his homework and digested it thoroughly. Obviously he has steeped himself in years of study and communication with others in all related esoteric fields, East and West. Gnosticism, religion, psychology, Qabalah, Alchemy, Occult Philosophy, magic, Poetry, Art (and likely much personal experience and meditation) have informed his artistic exploration of the Greater Mysteries. This is also revealed by the bibliography at the end. The images are based on traditional Occult and Tarot philosophy but are not a repeat of the same old designs we are all familiar with. The artist's revisioning has brought out much to be pondered. The book leads you through each Tarot archetype and the meanings of the drawings, directing your attention to details you may miss on first look. There are no directions for cartomancy or divination. No divinitory meanings or card spreads for readings. The keys are revealed individually and inter-connectedly, arising one from the other in natural order. This is pure Wisdom being revealed.

The work is truly beautiful. Leigh J. McCloskey has humbly and wisely stepped back and allowed the work to speak for itself without any "I, I, I, me, me, me," egoistic grandstanding. While some Tarot decks advertise by name alone, McCloskey's name has to be sought for on the actual book cover and deck's package. This gives a big clue as to the honest and sincere degree of sharing of wisdom he seeks to express (and achieves) through his work. The book 'Tarot Revisioned' is an oasis in the desert of contemporary esoteric Tarot studies that seek to go beyond mere divination to the deeper philosophy it conceals / reveals. A distillation of centuries of Gnostic, alchemical and esoteric philosophy which the author has somehow managed to succinctly convey in word and image is waiting for you.

The deck is a good companion to the book but not completely necessary to appreciate the work. The deck is not of typical card stock we are used to with modern Tarot decks and so does not really lend itself to shuffling. And because of it's size and design it is not really to be used for divination (IMO) but more as a tool for meditation and contemplation. Though of course one could draw a single card for contemplation or as a daily affirmation if one chose. If you can afford only one (the book or deck) then I would suggest the book because it is well written and full of wisdom and the illustrations are large enough to be appreciated. I got both and am glad I did. The Olandar Press has proved itself to me as a reliable and trustworthy source of quality work with the 'Tarot Revisioned' book and Tarot deck and I really hope you check out the work of Leigh J. McCloskey. Amazon does not permit links in these reviews so I will direct you to youtube - Leigh J McCloskey, 'Mothership: Revelations in Pink' for an amusing introduction to this remarkable man's world, work and philosophy.

Perhaps it is because this book is filled with nothing but women. I've seen her art on all kinds of other products so when I found this book I had to snatch it up. If you're a fan of Amy as well I would recommend you do the same.

SIGNING IS GREAT

I started signing with my 8-month-old son. He got it after a couple of months, and from that point on, life was much easier. Great for parents who want to communicate with an infant who is in turmoil out of frustration because you don't understand what they want or need.

I got several sets of these cards and I love all of them. I punched a hole in the top corner and put a binder ring on them. Now I can tote them around in my diaper bag! These are great and I love how many signs I'm going to be able to teach my LO!

Worth the money

These cards are great for learning basic signs with your kids. Older kids learn fast from the cards, and toddlers enjoy them too, but be sure to laminate them because they bend and tear easily in toddlers' hands. The pictures can also be used for communication before the signs are memorized because a child can point to what they want by finding the picture card.

Spent $6,500+ on treatment from Author & not better!

I first bought this book to try to "cure" my allergies myself thinking that this book would teach me how. However, this book just talks about how people magically were cured from NAET. This book is basically a marketing brochure to get you to visit one of their NAET offices. And you know what? I did visit one of their offices. In fact, I went to see the author herself to be treated by her personally. Yes, I saw the author herself, AKA the inventor of this "magical allergy cure".

When you get to the office they tell you that it is required that you read one of the NAET books, which means you have to buy one of her books. When you have a consultation they tell you that they can cure pretty much anything. Yes, ANYTHING. Here are a few things that they claim they can cure:

1) Allergies
2) Asthma
3) ADHD
4) Autism
5) Back Pain
6) Headaches
7) Cancer - YES, CANCER!
8) AIDS - YES, AIDS!
9) Cold sores

Here are some other ones they say they can cure:

- Loneliness
- Greed
- Guilt
- Addiction
- Lack of confidence

They claim that everything is caused by allergies. Autism = mercury allergy. Psoriasis/Eczema = several allergies. AIDS = virus allergy. Cancer = radiation allergy. Here are a list of the allergies that people are ACTUALLY being treated for:

- the color blue
- heat/cold
- wind
- people (family members)
- TV/computer screen
- light/darkness
- water

Yes, these are what they claim are allergies. And I have been treated for them by Devi Nambudripad herself.

Now let me get to the cost of treatment. The initial consultation is $175 and each allergy cost $55-75 per allergy (FYI, she charges $75 for most people but charges $55 if you ask about any discounts....a[...] isn't that nice) So if you are treated for an egg allergy that's $75. I was told I needed to be treated for 80 allergies. I ended up getting treated for 100 allergies because they kept saying I needed more and more.

So I ended up spending more than $6,500 on allergy treatments, blood tests, books, and "special" vitamins that they sell. This was over the span of 2 years and this does not even include the cost of my gas and my time.

SO HOW DOES THE TREATMENT WORK?
Well if you thought what you just read was bad, wait until you read how the treatment works.

Step 1: They hand you a small vile with a clear liquid in it that reads "feathers" for example. They don't even hand you a real feather. Then you lie down on a table and see if you are "allergic" to the allergy by doing what they call a "muscle test". You basically lie on your back and she tries to push your arm down. If it goes down then you are allergic. If she can't push your arm down then you are not allergic to it.

Step 2: Once she decides you are allergic to it, you lie face down and she puts this electric gun thing on your back.

Step 3: You are then told to lie in a room, where they insert 6-8 needles in your hands, elbows, and feet. You then lie there for 20 minutes still holding the vile of clear liquid.

Step 4: (this is the hardest step) She then removes the needles from your body and tells you to avoid the "allergy" for 24 hours! Yes, 24 hours meaning you cannot EAT or TOUCH anything with that allergen. So for example, if you were treated for "Animal Fat" that means you cannot eat any meats for that whole day. I swear, there have been times where the only food I was allowed to eat was fries and water. There has been about 20 times that has happened. And if you do EAT or TOUCH the allergen withing 24 hours, then you will FAIL the treatment and will have to pay AGAIN to have it retreated.

So as you can see the vast amount of time, effort and money that a person must invest into this NEAT treatment. And even if it did work, it's still not easy to do. I have not improved at all, I am $6,500+ poorer and lost a lot of time.

Any people who say they have improved have merely just experience the PLACEBO EFFECT. If you would really like help with your allergies or any other illness you should purchase Healing Back Pain by: Dr. Sarno or any other of his books. He talks about a natural way to heal your back pain along with your allergies. And it does not require any additional cost or treatments.

NAET is a total waste of time an money and these people need to be stopped. I encourage all people who have been treated by NAET to charge them with a lawsuit. These people must be SUED for practicing quackery and delivering no results. You can go to Yelp (dot) com and search for "Medical Malpractice Lawyer" in your area. You can Google "Medical Malpractice Lawyer" too. Find a highly rated lawyer to fight for you. Many lawyers don't charge you any money unless they WIN the case. This means they get paid on a percentage of what you win from the lawsuit. And they do all the work so you have nothing to worry about and nothing to lose.

I really felt that Dora Kalff was a woman of great warmth and intuition. Mrs. Kalff was also the possessor of many talents that contributed to her therapeutic work.

A Seminal and Classic Book

The republication of Sandplay: A Psychotherapeutic Approach to the Psyche is an especially important contribution to the field of sandplay. This seminal, classic book had been out of print for several years and sorely missed.
The 2003 edition by Temenos press opens with a new and riveting foreword by Dr. Martin Kalff about the life of his mother, Dora M. Kalff. His "experience near" delivery of thought and feeling brings to the reader a special intimacy with Dora Kalff's personal and professional life experiences.
Temenos is scrupulous in retaining Dora Kalff's original words, but has added useful material which makes it possible to use Sandplay: A Psychotherapeutic Approach to the Psyche as a reference book: a detailed new table of illustrations where chapters, pages and captions are clearly cross referenced, a table of works cited which is also "user friendly," and finally an excellent index.
In chapter 1, Sandplay: A Pathway to the Psyche, Dora Kalff lays out the phases fo psychic development. The reader is immediately struck by her teaching style, an by the generous number of illustrations. Chapters 2 through 10 are case histories. To me these chapters read not only like clinical case histories but also like biographical vignettes that happen to be "clinical." One not only understands but gets the "feel" of how Kalff worked. Some of the chapters are : Kim, a 12-year old- with learning problems; James, a 16-year-old who experienced early trauma; Dede, a 5-year-old with a speech block; Ursula, a young woman suffering from depression; and Eric, a man with a blushing problem. Other chapters deal with issues of anxiety, enuresis, passivity, and isolation. The book's conclusion confirms Kalff's related wisdom.
