About the Author
Sarah Kaip wrote this book to give women realistic, no-nonsense strategies for dealing with everyday workplace issues. The Woman’s Workplace Survival Guide is based on Kaip’s own tumultuous career, although she does not refer to herself or her career specifically. Like many people, she felt victimized by the corporate world.

The only thing she had going for her was two patient and understanding mentors. With their help, she learned how to deal with people and problems in the workplace with maturity, sensitivity, and self-awareness. She is successful today because she made a plan for success. That plan included the same advice she offers in this book.

Kaip has a Bachelor’s degree from Linfield College in McMinnivlle, Oregon and a Master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin. She currently lives in Medford, OR and works as a researcher and writer.

A Better Work Environment

It takes all types of people to make the world go round, or so they say. Have you ever had to deal with a co-worker who had the innate ability to dance on the very last nerve that you had left? What about that big crybaby who sits across from you and would get a lot more work done if she would just stop her dang whining and get to work? Well, if you ever had to endure the working world and its inhabitants, then you may want to acquire Sarah Kaip's THE WORKING WOMAN'S WORKPLACE SURVIVAL GUIDE.

In this guide, Ms. Kaip analyzes relationships amongst co-workers based on personality types. For instance, we have the Prima Donna group who believe that they are God's "gift to the corporate world" and that the Earth rotates around them. Basically, Prima Donnas are the ones who love all the glory - they can talk the talk but they can't walk the walk and, oftentimes, they pass the buck when it comes to getting work done. As with all of her personality descriptions, Ms. Kaip offers a solution to dealing with the Prima Donnas. She advises that if we have to deal with a Prima Donna type in our workplace, then it would be up to us to create a boundary as to what type of behaviors we're willing to accept. Kaip addresses six personality characteristics and offers up good, sound advice for dealing with them. When I read the very first sentence of the "Complainers and Whiners" section, I found myself saying "Damn!" because Ms. Kaip states that the "very problem that they (whiners and complainers) exist is the problem."

The other major sections of the book are "Surviving Bosses" and "Surviving Yourself." Each section is as enlightening as the first. By her writing style, it is evident that Ms. Kaip has done her homework. As a human resources professional, the concepts presented to me in this book were not anything new, however, Ms. Kaip's presentation framed them in a new, entertaining manner. She laces the book with pearls of advice such as "influence others to be positive" and "don't be afraid to apologize". The one caveat to this book is that I would have liked for the author to reference her sources when citing statistical data. For instance, the "Asking for a Raise" chapter utilized a great deal of statistical information and I would have liked to have had the opportunity to reference her sources. All in all, Ms. Kaip has penned an informative read that could apply to anyone in the workplace, whether male or female. (RAW Rating: 3.5)

For any woman (or man) who is new to the workforce, one of the major things to consider is getting along with co-workers. This book looks at the sort of people one will meet in the workplace, and what to do about it.

Are your co-workers arrogant, cynical, passive-aggressive, bullies or complainers? Publicly praise them for their help when appropriate, and don't be afraid to stand up to them. If they created a problem, don't make it personal; make them come up with a solution. If someone tries to dump their work on you, set clear boundaries as to what you will, and won't, do. In meetings, do not, for any reason, lead with, "This may be a stupid question, but..."

What if you are the one with the "problem"? This book looks at negative self talk, people who are impatient or perfectionists, overcoming social anxiety, and dealing with criticism (not all criticism is a personal attack).

The author also looks at when to work from home, when to change jobs, and when your employer makes that decision for you (being fired is not the end of the world). More serious issues are covered, like pregnancy discrimination, sexual harassment, equal pay for equal work, and asking for a raise (something which is never easy, no matter who you are).

This book may be intended for women, but it is also highly recommended for men entering the workforce, too. It is very easy to read, and the author does a fine job presenting solutions for the situations that may be encountered in the workplace.

Is Work a Four Letter Word? It Doesn't Have to Be!

"On the most basic level, you give your employers 40 hours a week, and the employer gives you a paycheck. But on a deeper level, you give them your personality, character, skills, knowledge, ideas, trust, and loyalty. In return, employers and coworkers give you a sense of belonging, security, personal and professional development, opportunities, and support." When I read that I thought, "WOW! Is that ever right on!"

Author Sarah Kaip certainly knew what she was talking about when she put this book together. Her humor and witty style make reading this guide a pleasure. I have been in the workforce for over thirty years and have seen most of the issues first hand. I have been on both sides of some of the issues, and I sure wish this book had been around sooner.

The information and advice in The Woman's Workplace Survival Guide doesn't just apply to women, or office jobs, but to anyone in the workforce in any position. I have worked in plywood mills, retail stores, television stations, and corporate offices, and the insights and solutions contained in this book cover most of the situations I have found myself in.

I highly recommend this book, it should be required reading curriculum for high school and college students looking to enter the workforce. An excellent book for use in job councils and in rehabilitating displaced workers.

Can Be Considered "Ref A" or the Prime Directive

I came late to bioneering, after I was inspired by Herman Daly's Ecological Economics: Principles And Applications, Brian Czech's Shoveling Fuel for a Runaway Train: Errant Economists, Shameful Spenders, and a Plan to Stop them All; and everything by Paul Hawkin, but especially The Ecology of Commerce.

I have had an interest in the intersection of global science, sustainable political and social and economic orders, and the vulnerability of the nation-state in the face of growing complexity for some time, and many of my other reviews focus on these literatures, as well as the literatures of collective intelligence, global assemlages, wealth of networks, localized resilience, and so on.

I make mention of that broader literature to add emphasis to my view that this book is one of the most extraordinary I have ever encountered. I made a mistake when I first got it months ago and put it sight unseen into my "hard and dense, save for intercontinental trip." This book is not hard, not dense, and it is both easy to read and intellectually elegant. I can easily see this book as the single mandatory first year or summer pre-reading at any level--undergraduate or graduate--along with contextual books such as:

The sixteen chapters and five appendices are elegant--concise, clear key points, short, just the right mix of photos (including color in a center spread) figures, and text.

The publisher has been criminally remiss in failing to load the varied items that Amazon allows, such as the table of contents. I am increasingly disenchanted with publishers and of the view that Amazon should get into the book publishing business, sending digital copies to FedExKinko's, helping authors self publish (full disclosure: BOTH Fred Smith at FedEx and Jeff Bezos at Amazon blew me off--these guys are simply not serious about innovation).

I put this book down with several thoughts:

1) Enormously impressed with the University of Oregon in Eugene, to the point of trying to get my oldest to take his computer and creative skills there.

2) Profoundly delighted with the deep philosophical underpinning that one finds throughout the book, without pretense or pomposity.

3) The one appendix I would have liked to see that is not there is the one entitles: Green to Gold--Bottom-Line Dollar Savings Over Time, and then a whole range of the elements of sustainable design by climate zone.

This is an extremely satisfying book to read. My last throught: it's time to write the Operating Manual for Spaceship Earth. Read more about this at Earth Intelligence Network. This book by Jason McLennan is a perfect model for what the larger systems book should strive to be.

About the Author
T. Mullen was born on the Virgin Island of Saint Thomas before moving to the suburbs of Chicago. From there he moved to live in the Wicklow Hills of Ireland. 

For fifteen years he lived outside the United States while managing water resource and environmental projects in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America. These years provided groundwork for writing both fiction and non-fiction books. He has written magazine articles related to environmental issues as well as a dozen books included in six different series.

Rivers of Change makes way to Xanadu

I'll never forget the day I met Tom Mullen. It was on Memorial Day a couple of years ago when I was assigned to the Missouri River in Atchison, Kansas, to take pictures. It was a beautiful day, the sun was shining, the trees were green and the view from the river from Veteran's Memorial Park was breathtaking. When I stood by the monument, under that great American flag, watching the Mighty Mo move on down the banks under one of the last remaining truss bridges in the world, I knew I was swirled around historical surroundings and I liked it.
Very proud veterans, who still consider themselves soldiers, came to the river for their annual Memorial Day service not far from the Amelia Earhart Bridge.
After I was done, I took a few more minutes to absorb the atmosphere, while thinking of Kubla Khan, the Alph and that "the sacred river," when I noticed someone else in my Xanadue.
And he just sat there watching the river.
He didn't seem to notice me and it looked like he was studying something - paying close attention to something.
So, I walked up to this stranger and stuck out my hand.
"Hi, I'm Marilyn Fontenot, isn't it a beautiful day?" I said.
"It sure is," he said. "I'm Tom Mullen. Glad to meet you."
He told me he and his truck, Six Pack, were "just passing through," and they had come by way of St. Louis, Mo. He was on his way to Oregon and was working on a book. He was in Atchison to find Dan Bowen, the wildlife biologist at Benedictine College. I was intrigued and asked him plenty of questions and he so graciously answered.
He had places to go, people to meet and things to see, he said.
We spent a lot of time together while he was in Atchison. I introduced him to people in town and he found the ones he was looking for.
We met at Mueller's Locker for mozzarella sticks and shrimp for lunch and Purcell's Landing for beer and burgers for supper - all along the Missouri River.
"Tom, you know the hardest thing for a writer to do is write," I told him when he got discouraged.
"I know, I know," he used to say.
The time flew by and soon he said adios and I said happy trails.
I hadn't heard from him in months then a couple of weeks ago in April I got a package in the mail.
"Rivers of Change: Trailing the Waterways of Lewis and Clark," by Tom Mullen, was slipped inside complete with my name in the acknowledgements.
It didn't take me long to read the entire book. It's one of those books you start and can't stop until it's finished.
What a trip that was.
He took me with him to exotic places where I met a slew of colorful strangers. He canoed untamed and scenic river stretches, bicycled beside river barges, scuba dived and explored the makings of dam power plants, all the while he kept meeting strangers.
Tom found Jim Nower, a farmer in Weston, Mo., who said "I'm 81 now. My family's been on this farm since Great Grandfather Nower got here in 1856."
In Doniphan he was looking for a monument, which was placed there by Benedictine Monks along the river when they settled in Doniphan in the middle 1800s.
Then he went looking for Wolf River Bob in White Cloud and found him.
"A man with a tousled Kris Kringle beard and a pony tail stood. He almost saluted when he heard his name," Tom wrote
"Yessir, `at's me," he said. "Wolf River Bob."
Tom and Six Pack kept going
They followed that ole' river all the way to Astoria and the Pacific Ocean through tamed Crow country where he talks to Joe Medicine Crow then to Fort Peck Lake in Montana, "When the Land Belonged to God."
He and Six Pack finally made their destination.
It wasn't long before he convinced a publishing company to publish his book where his "Rivers of Change" takes us to a Xanadu, with its own twists and turns of prose and lyric with a visual that puts us on the page.
I'm glad I met Tom Mullen that day in May. I'm glad I took the time to make a stranger feel welcome in a strange place. I'm glad he had the courage to keep going.
I'm glad I was intrigued.

A thoughtful and non-judgmental trip that will make you think

I had the privilege of taking a river trip with Tom Mullen a few years ago, and I'm pleased to recommend his book, Rivers of Change.

In Rivers of Change, Tom Mullen examines the ways in which the Missouri and Columbia Rivers have been changed by man and how that's affected life along the rivers. Tom took this trip after being out of the United States for years as a water management specialist in the Third World. When he decided to move back to the U.S., he took the summer to explore the rivers and get reacquainted with his own country. Buying an old camper, he set out with no particular agenda other than to follow the Missouri and Columbia and meet and talk with people along the way.

While a book that focuses on river management might not sound interesting, Tom is so open-minded and willing to listen and observe that you really get a balanced picture of the merits and consequences of managing wild rivers. If you are interested in dams and river ecology, you will find this book to be a refreshing and non-preachy look at the subject, with nice bits of personal philosophy thrown in.

More seminar than class...

This book is beautifully printed, and as contributor Robert Change noted, it would make an excellent coffee table book. My girlfriend, who is not an artist herself but loves art, enjoys looking at(and critiquing) the artwork and how each artist approached the creation of their piece. I, however, am an artist; I am writing this review as someone who is familiar with digital painting.

The book features 2 "tutorials" from each artist. The remainder of this volume is filled up with selected works by the featured artists, as well as works by other digital artists. The tutorials themselves are actually walkthroughs: the artists explain the steps they took to create their paintings, but not how or why they made each decision. They can teach you how many artists approach digital painting (workflow), but not the technicalities, such as brush size, colors, lighting choices, etc... There are really no lessons to be learned here, the information is on procedure alone.

Some of these walkthroughs can already be found online, and there is better material available for free. You will want to look up the artists individually and read their advice, study their pieces if you are serious about learning. In my opinion, an artist, especially a newcomer to digital art, will be much more benefited by joining a cg community than by purchasing this book.

However, if you are a fan of the contributing artists, you will surely enjoy seeing their works in print, up close and personal.

This book is half-gallery, half-instruction

This book is beautiful, and I'm glad I bought it. However, it is mostly a gallery of the artists' selected works. The work is breath-taking, and definitely fun to look through for inspiration and ask "How do they do it?" The book, unfortunately, does not tell you how they do it. Granted, each artist describes their techniques in two tutorials, for a total of eight in the entire book, which is helpful.... I had hoped for more of a how-to book. Nonetheless, if you are a fan of any of the artists, and even of the digital painting medium, this is a must-have book. But if you do not know much about how to execute digital painting, a how-to book is more up your alley.

Little technical advice

This was not the book I would expect with a subtitle of 'Master Class.' The tutorials are bland, and little to no technical advice (software specific tips) are included. Some of the work and advice is lousy. The few gems of this book make it worth the purchase - but it is really just a picture book more than a source of information for the new digital painter.

About time!

This book contains wondeful recepies that are not just "sugar free", but also take in consideration that white flour is bad for us also. So many claim to be healthy, but then use white flour as an ingredient! Xylitol is a healthy sweetener, used a lot in other countires, even actually GOOD for us! Put your foot down and say no to sugar consumption, especially for our children. Xylitol is also great for our teeth and resporatory

Xylitol good for you

Xylitol is a natural sugar (from birch trees) that is a healthy substitute for cane sugar. This book describes its uses and effects. Dentists recommend it for its restorative effect on tooth enamel. Very informative and useful book for those wanting to cut down their sugar use.

I know I will add or subtract ingreds. for our taste.Tried the apple crisp and it was too much oatmeal and not enough flour. You will be able to play with the recipes as you like. About the Author
Marjorie Hansen Shaevitz is an award-winning author, speaker and Stanford-trained professional counselor who has one goal: to make sure every student has the best college admissions advice, regardless of their family background, financial resources, geographic location or attendance at a public or private school. In addition to helping thousands of students gain admission to colleges that best fit them, Marjorie has worked for the Dean of Students Office at Stanford University, was Orientation Officer for the East West Center at the University of Hawaii and directed the Re-Entry Program Adult Students at the University of California, San Diego. An active member of the National Association for College Admission Counseling, Hansen Shaevitz is a former member of the Stanford University National Parents Board and spent twelve years as a trustee for La Jolla Country Day School. Her best-selling books include The Confident Women and The Superwoman Syndrome. She has appeared on many national radio and television programs, including The Oprah Winfrey Show and the original David Letterman Show and has been quoted as an expert in newspapers including the Wall Street Journal, New York Times and USA Today. Marjorie is a parent of two children and two stepchildren whom she guided through the admissions process.

I love her work!

I recommend Marjorie Shaevitz to all of my clients who have children that want to get admitted to top colleges. She is fantastic. Marjorie loves her work and her dedication shows in her results. adMission Possible is a wonderful way to learn her techniques and to help you - or someone you love - get admitted to the school of his or her choice!

The Ultimate College Admissions Guide

Navigating the maze of the college application process has just been made much easier by the publication of Marjorie Shaevitz's superb book "adMISSION POSSIBLE." As an Educational Counselor for MIT for almost two decades, I've had the privilege to interview and advise hundreds of college applicants. That experience allows me to fully appreciate the special value this book offers. It is the resource that high school students and their parents have needed for so long but was not available. The book is exceptionally well-organized and loaded with practical advice and useful information. In addition, it follows a logical and graphically pleasing format that avoids eye-tiring, text-crowded pages. In short, this expertly written book is the ultimate guide on college admissions.

This is a must read for all high school students and their parents. Getting into college nowadays is complex. This book is a fabulous resource to help guide you through the process. I highly recommend this book and would give it 6 stars if I could.
