I loved this book and Edwin Harkness Spina can spin a yarn with the best of them. But there's more to Mystic Warrior than a wonderful and tightly written narrative. Underpinning this page-turning, thrill-ride lies something that most popular storytellers don't even attempt to pull off; a coherent, system of thought; a philosophical model that speaks to a deeper, more profound reality than the one presented to us by the world merely lapping against our mundane senses. Spina's world is not one of randomness running against a background of chaos but rather one in which honor, courage and love have reasoned and palpable meaning. This essence subtly pulsates beneath a narrative that is an all out, balls-to-the-wall, heart stopping adventure. About the Author
Peter Altenberg (akaRichard Engländer, 1859-1919) born into a well-to-do, assimilated Viennese Jewish family, took advantage of a medical diagnosis of "over-excitation of the nervous system" and a consequent "incapacity for gainful employment" to devote himself heart and soul to the life of the Bohemian poet. Author of eleven books published during his lifetime and two more after his death, Altenberg also pioneered the verynotion of loose-fitting leisure attire, designed a line of necklaces, favored sandals, walking sticks and slivovitz. His long list of literary admirers included Karl Kraus, Heinrich and Thomas Mann, Robert Musil, Arthur Schnitzler and George Bernard Shaw.

Recipient of the 2012 Gold Grand Prize for Best Travel Story of the Year, Peter Wortsman is the author of A Modern Way to Die: Small Stories and Microtales, the plays The Tattooed Man Tells All and Burning Words, the recent memoir Ghost Dance in Berlin: A Rhapsody in Gray, and the forthcoming novel Cold Earth Wanderers. We relegated fairytales to the realm of childhood—that exceptional, wondrous, stirring, remarkable time of life! But why rig out childhood with it, when childhood is already sufficiently romantic and fairytale-like in and of itself? The disenchanted adult had best seek out the fairytale-like elements, the romanticism of each day and each hour right here and now in the hard, stern, cold fundament of life! Even the truly predestined poets with their more impressionable hearts, eyes and ears fetch their telling tidbits from actual occurrences, listening in on the romance of life itself.

SHEER PLEASURE

This is a book designed for the sheer pleasure of reading. Its rough-paper cover is handsome and feels good in the hand, and the stories and vignettes printed within are short and consumable within minutes. In this case the book-buyer is truly a "consumer." There's no plot, no difficulty, no need even to read them in order. You just pick out one after the other and consume it as you please.

Each one takes you back to a time when literature was not hype, not "riveting," not "jaw-dropping," and not "a must read." It was a time when you were thrilled by an author's curious point of view, unexpected turn of phrase and strange semblance of form. You had to read his work because it did something to you, maybe went straight to your heart and mind, and you wanted to feel the way he felt and see the way he saw. It's a different kind of "must read" and a different kind of purpose, so private that you almost hope the book will not find many readers, because the pleasure seems so much your own.

Yet one could find a utilitarian purpose in it. Peter Altenberg walks out in the city and sees people every day or on occasion, in the midst of life. He notes something down at his cafe or goes home with an idea in mind. This he commits to paper as fast as he can to capture the moment. He is convinced that "Everything is remarkable if our perspective of it is remarkable! And every little local incident written up in the daily newspaper can sound the depths of life, revealing all the tragic and the comic, the same as Shakespeare's tragedies!" Once the idea is on paper, it is fixed and he does not touch it again. It has crystallized into a prose poem. Writers constipated with the weight of significance and classes in creative writing burdened with technique could find a lesson here. As I said, it's a different time, when writing a tribute to a beautiful shopkeeper, or a thoughtful prostitute, or a radiant bird is purpose enough.

In TELEGRAMS OF THE SOUL there are quite a few shopkeepers and pretty women, all treated with such a delicate love that you take it into your heart and cannot help but project it onto the quite different women you see in the world today, no less pretentious and no less vulnerable than the anonymous souls of the past. There are also a lot of little girls, perhaps too many. And aristocrats and relatives and historical figures whom Alterberg admires (Franz Schubert). And a few animals besides (kingfisher, lion, agoutis). Some pieces are humorous, such as "Theater Evening," where the author babysits a poodle for a lady that both he and the dog impatiently hope will return; others are cruel, such as "Twelve," where a little girl catches little fish and tosses them on the ground to die, while an old woman to the side mourns for them. Some are reflective, such as "Fellow Man," which begins: "No man can abide another, in matters big or small, he just can't do it, that is his eternally unspoken tragedy." All are unique, so I won't try to paraphrase any more.

The 85 or so prose poems are translated in a fluid and effervescent manner by Peter Wortsman, who does not, like most translators of German, eschew the American idiom. Here we have "for crying out loud," "grin and bear it," "yuck" and even "arghh," bringing the Viennese setting close to home. Wortman also provides a charming afterword describing Altenberg as an overgrown child and ideal subject for Sigmund Freud. He characterizes his works as modern fairytales minus the "once upon a time" and usually the "happily ever after."

As mentioned, the volume is done up beautifully, its brown cover illustrated with a stirring brown-yellow-red portrait of Altenberg done by blazing genius Oskar Kokoschka in his Expressionist period. The back cover contains blurbs--originally words of praise--by Karl Kraus, Franz Kafka and Thomas Mann. Thus the little-known miniaturist Altenberg appears in the center of the glorious Viennese-Germanic culture that blossomed in the first decades of the twentieth century, and his little stories draw in the other greats of the day--Arthur Schnitzler, Robert Musil, Georg Trakl, Egon Shiele, Gustav Mahler, Arnold Schoenberg, Ludwig Wittgenstein, all those mentioned in the wonderful volume WITTGENSTEIN'S VIENNA by Allan Janik and Stephen Toulmin. And so, after such ease of reading and such excessive literary pleasure, you get a bonus: cultural enrichment. The way it used to be.

"Was ist so nur?"

Peter Altenberg (1859-1919) was one of the literary lions of Vienna around the turn of the last century. His specialty was short prose pieces that were poetic in their economy, turns of phrase, and allusiveness. He was equally known for his carefree, unorthodox lifestyle, which included being a habitué of the coffeehouses and, though a life-long bachelor, a lover of many women (and, like Lewis Carroll, an ardent admirer of prepubescent girls). In his excellent afterword to this volume, the translator Peter Wortsman summarizes Altenberg as a "turn-of-the-century Viennese raconteur-scribe, * * * a walker and a talker and an inveterate loll-about." Wortsman also passes along Franz Kafka's assessment: "Peter Altenberg is a genius of nullifications, a singular idealist who discovers the splendors of this world like cigarette butts in the ashtrays of coffeehouses."

TELEGRAMS OF THE SOUL is a collection of 90 of Altenberg's short prose pieces, none over five pages and many less than a page. They are, in Altenberg's words, "extracts from life", as seen and fancifully embroidered and creatively expressed by a man with a poet's sensibilities. Most deal with everyday bourgeois life in Vienna, circa 1895 to 1915, which included not only the coffeehouses and the Prater, but also the "Puff" (brothel) and such exotica as the village of Africans that for a year was set up as an exhibit at the Vienna Zoo.

Many of the pieces are whimsical. Some are cynical. A few are silly but they are offset by a few that are acutely poignant. A fair percentage, however, left me mildly baffled or utterly indifferent; too much time and distance, perhaps, separates Altenberg's aesthetic sensibility from mine. It is difficult to read more than four or five pieces at a time. In other words, the book does not lend itself to being read cover to cover.

Altenberg had a keen wit. One example is an aphorism from this book: "Coquetry is the immense decency of a desirable woman, thereby, for the moment at least, to hold off the disappointments she is bound to bring you." A second example is a quip included in Clive James's profile of Altenberg in "Cultural Amnesia": a young woman with whom he had struck up an intimate relationship reproached him because his interest in her was based only ("nur") on sexual attraction; Altenburg replied, "Was ist so nur?" ("What's so only?").

TELEGRAMS OF THE SOUL is scarcely essential reading, but it does illuminate, at first hand, the indolence and decadence that marked much of Vienna in the two decades before WWI, and it also reflects (albeit in shadow) one of the more distinctive souls of Viennese culture. Finally, I wish to commend the publisher, Archipelago Books, for a very sturdy, reader-friendly, and handsome paperback volume.

Haunting Insights

Not well known now, Peter Altenberg has obviously influenced many who followed and read him. His distinctive reflections are often incisive. Particularly memorable are the haunting sections on his involvement with the Hotentots (Bushman) exhibited in a zoo village with his righteous revulsion at their treatment.

About the Author

Truly Life Changing!

Just to preface: I am a married, conservative Christian mother with traditional views that, in this day and age, are borderline "old-fashioned". I believe in the Bible as the absolute, inerrant Word of God not to be added to or subtracted from, and to be taken in literal context. If these views aren't in line with your own, you're probably not going to agree with my review. Moving on!

Even as a conservative Christian in a traditional marriage, I struggled with how to love and serve others on a day to day basis, and to that end, how to love and serve God in a meaningful and impactful way. I wrestled with feelings of failure in my walk and inadequacy in my servitude. This book truly changed all that: Nancy and Chuck Missler discuss God's love in a realistic, meaningful way that opened my eyes to the truth of loving the agape way. Before I read this book, I would read 1 Corinthians 13 and want to cry at my own failure. My love was NOT at all times patient, or kind. My love DID envy, and did boast, it WAS proud. I felt woefully inadequate to loving others in the way that Jesus loved us, in the way that Paul commands us. I tried and tried on my own to change my heart with prayer, memorizing Bible verses (I'm not disparaging either of these things, by the way!) and yet still my sinful nature would harp on negative injustices done to me by non-Christians and even other Christians.

That's why this book changed my life: it made me realize that I myself am incapable of loving like 1 Corinthians 13 - it describes agape love, the love of God, and that love isn't attainable by human beings. Our sinful nature prevents that. We can only be vessels for agape love, and we can only become cleansed and worthy vessels when we cut away our own desires, emotional selfishness, negative attitudes and instead give them to God, who promises that "as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us." (Psalm 103:11) We ourselves are incapable of washing ourselves clean from negative thoughts, hatred, anger, bitterness, and resentment when people hurt us; we believe ourselves justified in feeling this way, and rehearse speeches in the mirror or silently berate others in our heads, not realizing that in doing this we are blocking the power of God's perfect, unconditional, and holy love in our hearts. This book taught me how to change all that by verbally giving these things to God.

Just as Nancy predicted, when I began to be a vessel for God's love instead of trying to be an imitator of it, my life improved. My love for others improved. My relationship with Jesus improved. I cannot recommend this book enough to anyone who is hurting, struggling with resentment, in a tense marriage, helpless as to what to do with their children, angry (justifiably or not), or questioning God's love for them. While I didn't struggle with all these things, these were all topics dwelt upon in the book in a practical, real way. Nancy's writing style is also easy to comprehend for even the novice reader.

A LIFE CHANGING MUST READ BOOK!!

A lot of Christians (myself included) tend to think that we genuinely love others. But if we pay close attention to God's Word, we realize that genuine, unconditional, agape love comes from God, not us.
Nancy Missler points out the reasons we can be double-minded and hypocrital as Christians, but she teaches us how to live a life that is genuine and God honoring!

The only way this book won't benefit you is if you choose not to apply the truths revealed in it. But if you do apply these truths, be prepared to be amazed at how doing things God's way and putting "self" aside can really change your life and your walk!

I can't stress this book enough- it's life changing and a must have for ALL Christians!

Casual and interested reader

I originally heard about this book and was slightly sceptical.

One reading (and listening to the tapes/CD), I found one thing immensely powerful with this book and its partner (Be Ye Transformed - same author), was with the Way of Agape, it lays the strong and deep foundation of God's love to us and how we are to love Him. Once the foundation is down, it can be invisible, it can get dirt on it and people may not notice, but its there. When you are ready, so is God. The foundation doesn't crumble and doesn't go away.

With the second book, and using this one as the basis, you can fly like superman (he always had a good base to run and jump from :-)

The third book from Nancy (Faith in the Night Seasons) will give you navigation for night flying!

Very nice Asian fusion book.

This is a very nice Asian fusion book.

The photos are very good, and recipes are generally simple, straightforward, and remarkably concise...a pleasure!

Techniques are suitable for intermediate level cooks, as beginners are not likely to go for finding and assembling the varied ingredients.

Main drawback is if you live outside of Asia or away from an Asian market to get your taro, chicken feet, red dried dates, wolfberries, astragalus root, Chilean bellflower, it's going to be a long search...and that's just for making Black Chicken Herbal Broth! Don't despair, you can even start on Asian Dried Fruit Dipped in Chocolate, and make Mango and Jackfruit Spring Rolls.

I bought this on the basis of the rave reviews, and just have found other fine Asian/Asian Fusion books with similar fine qualities, for less money, and with simpler recipes.

Rainer's credentials are impressive. Renowned chef Pierre Koffmann refers to him as one of the most brilliant young chefs to graduate his restaurant La Tante Claire in Chelsea (London). In addition to this culinary confirmation, Rainer has traveled and worked thoughout Asia, North America and Europe. So who better to iron out some of the wrinkles in the confusion over fusion than a chef who has first hand experience of working within a multitude of cultures and countries?
To set the scene the cookbook begins with a journey through an Asian wet market "the Temple to which the majority of Asian housewives make their daily pilgrimage for fresh food, household wares and other necessities." Wet markets offers every commodity that a cook could desire; produce, seafood, spices - even live chickens wait to be bought, slaughtered and plucked. To many chefs in Asia the pilgrimage to a wet market serves as the fuel that fires their imagination.
This well written piece puts the reader in the mood for the next five chapters of recipes. The chapters are logically categorized offering; soups and laksa (Asian noodle soups), vegetables, fish and seafood, meat and poultry and finally sweets.
The skills and techniques used in each of the dishes varies - the recipes suit cooks of every level. The Thai Red Curry Cappuccino proved to be delicious and the Kataifi Prawns is a really simple multi purpose dish that would be a good addition to anyone's home repertoire or a great snack for professional chef to add to their bar menu.
Each creation is accompanied by a brief narration from Rainer and complimented with inspirational photography courtesy of the author's friend Shekar. The lay out of the book is colorful and simple, finishing with a few "notes" from the chef. In this final part of the book Rainer explains some of his basic philosophies and credits the hard work of those who made the book possible.
To summarize - if you want to understand or love fusion food or are a true cookbook lover, Beyond Fusion will make a fantastic addition to your library.

As a professional I can say this is a very honest book. I really appreciated the way the dishes were executed and pictured in real time. There is no over manipulation of presentation to impress nor over stepping too many classic boundaries whether Asian or Occidental.It seems that going "beyond fusion" is in a way a sense of going back to basics. Where the items are fused as in the book I could taste and see how each would complement, not confuse. This guy has the back ground and obviously has a respect for food. I think it is a great book and it is surely one of those thing where to get something simply done is not necessarily done simply. Congratulations. Being in a less than cosmopolitan area I shall draw on this book to stimulate ideas in the future. A good find.

Only 12 years old when his first liver failed with advanced Wilson’s disease, David was among the first to receive a transplanted liver in 1981. According to the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS), nearly 90,000 people are waiting for donated organs today and every 13 minutes a new name is added to the list. Every 13 minutes another family’s life is thrown into turmoil as they begin the waiting process with the hope that their journey will end in life and not in death.

As each patient’s name is added to the waiting list, a number of unforeseen challenges await. The Gift of Life 2 was written to assist patients and their families in managing those challenges: Which transplant center is best for the patient? How does the waiting list work? Parichehr Yomtoob, David’s mother and the co-author (with Ted Schwarz) in 1986 of The Gift of Life, the story of David’s first transplant, is an activist and educator for organ donation and transplantation. She has co-authored The Gift of Life 2 with her daughter-in-law Laura Yomtoob and Deborah Weppler, one of our country’s most experienced transplant nurses. About the Author
Parichehr Yomtoob is a mother of three, grandmother of five, teacher, wife, volunteer, and an activist and educator for organ donation and transplantation. Her first book, The Gift of Life, was about her son David’s Wilson’s Disease and successful liver transplant. She coauthored the book with freelance writer Ted Schwarz. The book was published in 1986 in the U.S. and Japan and received rave reviews. Parichehr and her husband Joe reside in a suburb of Chicago.

Laura Yomtoob was born in 1965 and educated at the University of Michigan. She lives in the Chicago area with her husband and two sons. This is her first book.

Deborah Weppler is the Clinical Specialist/Senior Transplant Coordinator for the Liver and GI Transplant Team at Jackson Memorial Hospital, University of Miami Medical Center. As a Senior Transplant Coordinator, she is responsible for coordinating over 200 liver transplants and 30 intestinal transplants annually. She also follows approximately 600 pre-transplant and 2,200 post-transplant patients, supervises seven post-transplant coordinators, five preoperative coordinators, three pediatric coordinators, and multiple ancillary personnel. In addition, she oversees multiple clinical research projects. She has been the author and coauthor of many medical articles and books.

As the mother of a multiorgan transplant daughter, we were very fortunate to be under the care of Debbie Weppler and the transplant team at the University of Miami. My daughter recovered from a very difficult transplant by following Debbie Weppler's advice. If you or a loved one is facing a transplant, read this book so you will know what to expect. It will be a tremendous help for you and guide you through the process.

Mother of liver transplant recipient.

This is a great book with useful medical information about the transplant process as well as a heart warming account of the struggles of waiting for an organ donor and receiving a liver transplant. I could hardly put the book down after I started reading. Emotions and events are described so well that you feel you are part of the family and therefore part of the journey.

I recently read this book and found it to be a particularly moving experience, expressing a remarkable commitment between mother and son and family. Even though the topic illness is liver failure and liver transplant, I felt that thoughtfully reading The Gift of Life 2 would be very helpful to a family coping with any serious illness.

Grade 1–4—An introduction identifies this story as part of the longer Lakota creation legend that was passed from generation to generation as oral history. The story begins with the Great Spirit Skan, who created "our ancestors," taking "our bones from Stone, our bodies from Earth, and our souls from himself and Wind and Thunder." The Lakota lived in the Underworld until Spider, the Trickster, sent Wolf to persuade Tokahe, the strongest man, that life would be easy on the surface. However, Tatanka, the holy man, warned him not to go. When the people found life was difficult, Spider laughed at them, but Tatanka helped them by turning into a buffalo able to communicate with the Spirits and to give the people the sustenance they needed to survive. Montileaux, an Oglala Lakota artist, illustrates the text with paintings rendered in a two-dimensional format that reflects traditional buffalo-hide paintings. The colorful, stylized images match the formal tone of the story. The English telling is clear and concise, with the corresponding Lakota text appearing alongside. Read "Robbed" so you don't get robbed

I'm a doctor starting my own practice & found Johsnton's book highly informative and entertaining. His stories are detailed, well-written, and full of useful information. After reading "Robbed," I feel MUCH more prepared to protect both myself and my future clients from ethical/legal harm.
Not to mention, any book that starts with a Woody Guthrie quote is a friend of mine!

Definitely give this book a read.

Real science....real fun

We absolutely love this book. The pictures are wonderful - colorful and cute. My kids love the silly faces on the different atoms. Even my 4-yr-old will say "look, there's sodium attaching to chlorine", because he remembers which color and face goes with which atom.

The book itself is hardbound and the pages are bright and glossy. All around beautiful book.

This is not baby chemistry - it's advanced stuff but written in a way kids can understand. We're really enjoying the things we're learning and most importantly, they're retaining it. You do need the teacher's manual and student text in order to get the lab stuff. Or if you're really creative you could make up labs on your own. I bought 1 student book and the kids verbally tell me their thoughts and observations. The publisher does give permission to photocopy the student labs as well, so that can save you some money.

My only complaint is that the book is so short. I wanted this to last a year, but we got done in 2 months.

I will be using all of her books. I think it is the best science program out there

Great book for curious minds....

Homeschooling an extremely intelligent and inquisitive 6-year-old is a challenge to say the least. Most science curricula created for elementary age kids is extremely simplistic, vague, and sometimes even dead wrong. Kudos to Dr. Keller for creating a chemistry book that my son eagerly looked forward to working with each week - he loved it so much that we breezed through the whole book in less than 4 months. About the Author
Lincoln Palmer Bloomfield graduated in 1941from Harvard, where he later received a Ph.D. He served in the US Navy during World War II, in the State Department for eleven years and later in the Carter White House as director of global issues for the National Security Council. As a political science professor at MIT he directed MIT’s arms control project and pioneered development of political gaming, published eleven books plus numerous articles and news commentaries, hosted a national TV program, advised US and foreign governments, and lectured in thirty-five countries. He lives in Cohasset, MA with his wife, a former New Zealand diplomat.

The unbelievable world of policy making

This book, Accidental En counters with History, is a good read. Here's someone with the analytical eye of a political scientist and the experience in world affairs sought after by heads of states (including President Carter) who finally looks back some of the major events shaping our lives. Most revealing is how the decisions affecting those events are made. And these are both fascinating and, yes, even shocking, for what often matters most inside the Beltway is to keep the boss with the feeling that his ideas are unflawed.

This is a compelling read that offers fascinating insights into how the State Department and our Embassies in foreign countries operate. The portraits drawn of famous figures in foreign affairs like John Foster Dulles are particularly interesting.

A Serious Subject Taught with Wonderful Humor

This personal account is like a charming travelogue through the recent history of our nation's foreign policy. Lincoln Bloomfield helps those of us who are novices better understand the complexities of policy and decision making. His humorous asides often made me laugh out loud. Best of all, he gives the reader real hope that rationality and logic can be brought to the table when defining and implementing international policies. He describes the process that he has devised and utilized that could help bring about a more peaceful world. I wish our current national leaders would read this book!
