Not Quite What I Expected

Although this book has lovely glossies of quilts and projects, I expected a bit more. For an avid quilter, perhaps the additonal projects (such as the apron, bonnet, splasher, sewing case) are just that,....additional. My love is for bold 19th century quilts (patterns), and the next love is the history of the women who made them. I would have liked to have seen ACTUAL GLOSSIES OF PIONEER WOMENS' QUILTS, along with the author's interpretative quilts and patterns. Instead, there is some written history on pioneer women, with pictures and patterns of the author's quilts based on her interpretation of the lives and times of women of that period.
Terry Clothier Thompson has provided some lovely four-block interpretations, however. I do not think I have seen a more charming "Sunflowers" quilt.
My opinion is that for 170 pages, a buyer should be able to expect more. When a quilter hears "19th century four-block quilts", she/he does not think about COMMONLY KNOWN PIECED patterns such as "homespun, chips & whetstones, kansas city star" etc., which are pieced quilts, and are included as patterns in Ms. Thompson's book; but an avid quilter instead recalls the bold, splashy appliques of the 19th century. I thought that too many pages were taken up with the more commonly known PIECED patterns.

disappointing

c.a. mcpherson, whose rating is, like mine, three stars, has made most of the points i would, though i would say that the apron, redwork, cushion, etc., patterns are not additional but wastes of space. this book is titled and billed as a resource of four-block quilts and, like c.a. mcpherson, i expected to see 19th century quilts and four block patterns, not pincushions and felted wool projects.

the stories of the pioneers are fascinating, and full marks to ms. thompson for including histories of black men and women and their contributions to the westward expansion. in fact, the only 19th century quilt pictured might have been made by a black woman (unless the tiny photograph on the top of page 87 is of an antique--and it and the modern version are certainly like none of the rocky road to wherever patterns i've seen).

for a historian, the author's writing is sloppy (only a few birth and death dates are given). the chapter illustrations frequently have no relation at all to the chapter subject--the old photos are fascinating, but not germane.

as for the actual quilt patterns, one is probably the ugliest thing i've seen for months, two are not four block, and one is only crib or lap sized. the cover quilt, the reason i bought the book, is buried in the back in the 'advice' section. i couldn't find it the first two times i looked through the book.

i judge pattern books as i judge cookbooks--i divide the book price by the number of things i'm likely to make, and if the result is a nice low number, i'm satisfied. there are only three out of the sixteen or so patterns i would likely make, so i'm not too happy about buying this book.

the advice section contains some good information--but you have to wade through general and skimpy instructions for making a quilt. i think a book like this should assume some degree of knowledge of quilting and applique rather than waste space on limited instructions for beginners. there are excellent instruction books available which might have been suggested to any beginner confident enough to tackle one of these quilts.

there are also some aspects of book formatting that i won't wasted time and space on--though the publisher really should have known better.

overall, i recommend this as a good book to get from the local library.

A Fresh Look at History and Some Great Quilt Patterns!

Terry Clothier Thompson has used her love of four-block quilts to produce a refreshing book filled with new looks at history and patterns inspired by antique quilts. The patterns are both pieced and applique, range from crib quilts to full-size quilts, and include full-size templates. This is not the first book on Four-Block Quilts - Linda Carlson has written three that contain more history of this genre and patterns for actual antique quilts. I like the fact that Terry - a popular teacher - has done something very original. The design and photography are stunning - this book is a keeper!

As a young bride, Veronica moved to Glin castle, Ireland. Despite an unhappy marriage, she and her husband restored the castle garden and became friends with influential garden experts and artists.

When she was widowed, Veronica married a wealthy Canadian businessman and transformed his summer retreat into a beautiful "wild garden" in the manner of William Robinson.

Visitors to the garden included royalty. Prince Charles and the late Diana, Princess of Wales were guests. Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip stayed at the estate for three days.

About the Author
Margaret Cadwaladr was born in Vancouver, British Columbia. She was educated at the University of British Columbia and awarded the degree of Master of Arts (Sociology) and a Diploma in Adult Education.

Margaret is an articulate and entertaining speaker and often lectures about the garden.

She is past Vice-President of the Federation of British Columbia Writers and a member of the Garden Writers of America and the Canadian Association for Photographic Arts.

An Engrosing Book, Difficult to Put Down

Now that I live on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, it's a short drive up the Island Highway to Milner Gardens in Qualicum Beach. A recent visit to the woodland gardens and English-style cottage with its breathtaking views of the Strait of Georgia was all the more memorable due to my reading of Margaret Cadwaladr's book, In Veronica's Garden. (The title comes from a book of the same title by poet Alfred Austin published in 1896.)

Whether you can visit the garden in person or not, you can delight in its beauty in the pages of Cadwaladr's book. She has woven a fascinating story around botanical names of flowers, family histories, facts about the ownership of Milner Gardens, its famous visitors and the garden experts who have influenced it. Most of the colour photos that greatly enhance the book were taken by the author. This is an engrossing book, one of those that is difficult to put down.

At the heart of the story is Veronica Milner. In fact, when author and subject met, Veronica said it was important to understand her in order to understand the garden. A garden which features over 500 varieties of rhododendrons contrasting with the majestic Douglas-firs and red-cedars of the West Coast rain forest. To gather information about the garden and its owner, Cadwaladr put many photographs of the garden in an album. As they chatted and looked at the photos, the visual cues would trigger Veronica's memory and keep her focused. Cadwaladr found this tactic to be so useful that she also took picture books from the Edwardian era, for instance, to her visits with Veronica.

Within a week of meeting Veronica in 1996, Cadwaladr took her first trip to Ireland and visited Glin, the castle where Veronica lived during her first marriage to Desmond FitzGerald, the Knight of Glin. Veronica's son Desmond, the current Knight of Glin, allowed Cadwaladr access to his father's detailed diaries, which ended shortly before the elder FitzGerald's death in 1949. The diaries confirmed for the author many details about artists, writers and prominent garden experts who had influenced the development of the gardens in Qualicum Beach.

Veronica Villiers was born in London, England, in 1909 and was descended from the Duke of Marlborough, as was Winston Churchill, her mother's cousin, which meant they were related to the late Diana, Princess of Wales. When Veronica married Desmond FitzGerald in 1929, they moved to Glin, the castle and 500 acre estate near Limerick. The couple had two daughters and a son. From the time Veronica and Desmond began their married life, they began to update the castle (built in the 1780s) and create a magnificent garden.

Cadwaladr gives a candid portrait of Veronica, an imperious woman, who was a gardener as well as a painter of flowers. Apparently, she had dalliances during her first marriage and was known to be a difficult, complex and unusual woman. When Desmond was ill with tuberculosis, he and Veronica travelled to New York and Chicago to visit several doctors. While on a train, they met Canadian businessman Ray Milner. After Desmond died, Veronica, in a crimson satin dress, married Ray Milner in London in 1954.

The home that Veronica moved to in Qualicum Beach on Vancouver Island had been the summer home of Ray and his first wife Rina. With the help of Ted and Mary Greig, who owned a nursery in Royston, Veronica began to expand the garden. It became not a manicured garden of mowed lawns but rather controlled chaos, as it has been described. Garden writer William Robinson had a profound influence on Veronica and therefore on the style of the garden and the plants chosen for it.

Veronica became a widow again in 1975 when Ray died. She continued to travel and employ servants from India. Winston Churchill's daughter Mary Soames visited her in 1984. Charles and Diana visited in 1986. A photograph of Princess Diana, her feet on the rung of a chair, stirs a poignant memory. Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip visited the garden and stayed at the house in October 1987. Veronica, though, had to stay at a nearby hotel while the royal visitors slept in her room (on a new mattress) and only got to see them in the last hour of their visit.

To preserve the gardens, especially following her demise, Veronica found a benefactor via Malaspina University-College in Nanaimo. The garden was dedicated on May 17, 1996, and Veronica was presented with a honorary certificate in horticulture. The author and her husband, Jim, who was coordinator of the horticulture program at Malaspina, were in attendance. That was the day Cadwaladr met Veronica, a woman who complained about "the decline of the aristocracy." Cadwaladr found her subject to be "both gifted and far-sighted." Veronica "created a Canadian version of a "wild garden" in the rainforest, a teaching tool and living laboratory in a time when conservation was becoming increasingly important." Veronica Milner died in 1998.

This book is a stunning example of the results of dedication to life story, including the research, the interviews, the special relationship formed, the surprises and knowledge gleaned along the way. In Cadwaladr's case, she took on the extra challenge of starting her own publishing company to publish her book. When I last spoke to her, she was getting ready to go into a second printing.

Margaret Cadwaladr has had a long-standing interest in autobiography and life story. She took an interdisciplinary graduate-level course at the University of British Columbia on the topic and gives workshops now on life writing as well as on the subject of self-publishing. She often is asked to speak to gardening clubs in Canada and the U.S.

Too much name dropping, not enough garden

This book sets out to tell the story of a garden and the larger-than-life personality who helped in its creation. The garden is the Milner Garden and Woodland, near Qualicum Beach on Vancouver Island off Canada's south west coast. It has an international reputation as a beautiful "natural" woodland garden. Sadly, the book does not do the garden justice.
The Veronica of the title is Veronica Milner, born to an aristocratic English family and related to both Winston Churchill and Princess Diana. She first married Desmond FitzGerald, Knight of Glin and lived a life of privilege in an Irish castle. Her second husband, Ray Milner, was a prominent and wealthy Canadian businessman who seems to have been an exceptionally nice man. Ray had previously been married to Catherine and the two of them had bought the land and developed what became the Milner Garden. Both loved the garden and the trees that gave it its lovely natural setting beside the ocean. After Catherine's death Ray met and married Veronica and somehow managed to live amicably with this selfish, snobbish, difficult woman and to finance her extravagances, which included improvements to the garden.
The writer seems to be fascinated with Veronica's wealthy and titled background, and with visits from the Queen, Prince Philip, Prince Charles and Princess Diana to the garden. The reader has to struggle through page after page of name dropping. I had been hoping for a book about the garden, not "Lives of the Rich and Famous". There is very little information about the design of the garden, and how it evolved, and it seems that Veronica took much of the credit due to Ray and Catherine Milner. The illustrations are adequate (except for the maps, which are quite crude) but not professional quality and don't really reflect the beauty of the garden.
This is a regional book with little to recommend it to readers outside British Columbia. Actually, there's not much to recommend it to local readers either.

The best grilling recipes!

This is a collection of over 75 recipes by the top chefs in Hawaii. It's written in a style that is so easy to read, the recipes are fabulous and it even shows you how to deep fry a turkey ( awesome and NOT greasy!) , make a fabulous seafood stew in tin foil and cook some of the best ribs you'll ever taste.

If you've been to Hawaii and love the restaurants - you will LOVE this book.

Good cookbook!! great ideas!

For those who want some serious tailgating Ideas. This book is the winner.. It's hard to tailgate in Downtown Atlanta for the Falcons games, but other cities, you might be able to use it well. I know College towns are huge on it. Being on the East Coast, and Hawai'i is 3600 miles away from me, you don't get many UH fans. So I don't have all the buddies to tailgate with at my house.. But a must for those who like food

The Heart and Science of Yoga

This book is truly a blueprint for peace and happiness. These teachings have enabled me to realize the power that is inherent within each of us. I have learned how to turn down the noise of my own busy mind and listen to the stillness that is ever present, if we just stop to notice it and develop an ear to hear it. It seems that we are born into this world with everyting that we could possibly need to navigate through our entire lives and this book enabled me to learn how to tap into that realization and discovery. Leonard Perlmutter has written a beautiful resource manual which I will read again and again and I highly recommend it to all those thirsting for a truly beautiful philosophy of life.

This book contains basic material for artists to market and self-promote. Something I am very much for...
When I purchased the book nearly one year ago, right away upon reading the chapter on blogging I found a dead link listing. I'd systematically looked up all the links and the [...] link was D.O.A. ( I found an article on their demise). Fortunately a lot of the good sites are long lasting, but some new sites are not mentioned...
*I'd Rather Be in The Studio* was published February 2008, and IMO there should be a second revised and updated version by now for full value for your money...
I gave the book 3 stars primary based on this lack of a second edition and the rather chaotic table of contents in the first edition.

An important book for artists...

Alyson B. Stanfield's book on self-promotion for artists is a true gem. I've never been so excited by an art marketing book - and I own several different titles. What sets Alyson's book apart from the rest is not only the wealth of ideas, tips and advice - better have that highlighter and Post-It flags handy - but the intelligent and accessible way in which the material is presented. The book's focus is on the eight most frequently expressed excuses from artists about why they don't self-promote. Of those eight, I personally identified with five of them. Alyson tackles each one as the chapters unfold, providing insightful and practical solutions to get on with getting the word out about your art. And her optimistic style is inspiring. I feel like she's right there next to me offering encouragement and suggestions.

I teach painting at the college level and have integrated this book into the students' self-promotion course. Within days of requesting the book as a required course text, the author contacted me. I shared my syllabus with her and she's interested to use it as an example. From all I can see, Ms. Stanfield practices what she preaches, and is clearly a great communicator. The Actions around which the content is organized can be adapted to almost any artistic approach. I chose this book over many others because of the up-to-date information regarding online promotional strategies, the author's emphasis on the importance for artists to be part of their community, the role of writing and speaking in the life of a visual artist, and its no-nonsense approach.

Cute and funny Children's book!

The mice of Bistrot des Sept Freres published by Tanglewood Press written and illustrated by Marie LeTourneau with Danielle Reed Baty, is a beautiful children's story. I thank Netgalley for the book.

Pictures researched, with a special aristocratic touch to my point of view.

The story is this one: Once upon a time there was a place (Paris) populated only by mices. They were like humans so, our society, plenty of shops, stores etc. One of these ones was a wonderful bistro: The Bistrot des Sept Frère Chef Marcel. The chef has seven sons and one daughter Petite Michelle. This chef goes proud for something: he won per years and years a special prize, the one of, can you guess what? Best Cheese Soup of all the France. At least, you know mices falls in love for cheese and France is a Cheese Paradise with wagons and wagons of varieties of all sort.

But what happens? Well, something pretty embarrassing: Chef Marcel uses for this special Cheese Soup a special ingredient. No other one of his family or friends knows the secret ingredient but he goes in panic when he receives a telegrams saying:

"Cher Chef Marcel, (Cher is for Dear in Francais, voilà!),
it is that time of year again.
French Culinary Judge Alfred Le Whisk
will arrive at your bistro
to taste your famous cheese soup
on the 2nd of June,
at one o'clock sharp,

Lovely and humorous story with beautiful illustrations

“The Mice of Bistrot des Sept Frères (Bistro of Seven Brothers)” is a lovely story about a restaurant known for its wonderful cheese soup. The restaurant is run by Chef Marcel (father mouse) and his highly publicized seven sons. He also has a lovely little daughter mouse who helps out here and there.

Every year, the judge arrives to try the famous soup to discover if it is still the most delicious cheese soup in France. Due to one thing and another, this year the chef is only given mere hours to prepare his soup and he is out of his special ingredient. What can they do? Only one of these mice seems able to keep their head when all else is in shambles.

It is such a cute story and the illustrations are beautifully done. It is a delight to read it to young children – and give a small lesson in the French language at the same time.

I love love LOOOOOOVE this book!

Yes, by now, you guys know that I'm a traditional talent, who uses paintbrushes and pencils 99% of the time. I only use digital for film concepts which I need to finish quickly...but that should not indicate that I look down on digital art. The images in this book are staggeringly beautiful! You cannot go wrong!

Best resource for TI 83 and TI 84

I am teaching precalculus in a private high school and I have been using "SAT Math with TI" of the same author in my classes and I am pretty pleased with it. This book is similar to the "SAT Math with TI" with three important additions. The first addition is a chapter on TI 89. In this chapter the author explains the F2 (algebra) menu of TI 89 which I believe is very useful for a college bound student. The second addition is 10 original 1C - 2C tests. Traditionally the tests are harder than usual. The third addition is the fact that there are more solved examples. I definitely recommend this book for all in search of a book devoted to the usage of TI in high school math context.
