I pondered over the many horrific incidents in Northern France during those last two years of Word War Two when so many lives, both German and Resistance fighters, were lost. I remembered the Death Run we organised after the war, when we promised the German concentration camp prison guards a safe trip to South America, only to lock them in the cabin of our cruiser, where we gassed them to death, after which we recovered all their stolen gold, mostly teeth! That gold later helped many war refugees. I realized it was time to tell my story, the exploitation of sex coupled with violent death. It was sixty years since it all began; now it was time to relive the experience that I had so successfully put out of my mind for so long. Little did I know that I was about to be called upon to help my old Portuguese friend, to rescue his kidnapped grandchildren from the clutches of my Nazi arch-enemies from South America.

About the Author
Richard Le Normand was born in Jersey Channel Islands in 1927 and was educated at Victoria College Jersey 1936–1944. Richard left college early, to avoid being ‘press-ganged’ into the construction of German fortifications—most of the ‘slave workers’ having been killed off by then and labour was needed to complete their fortifications in Alderney, a sister isle. After the Islands were liberated in 1945, Richard became a farmer, later specialising in intensive flower and tomato growing under glass. Richard then established a plastics factory to develop and produce new inventions, mainly in the horticultural field. In 1987, Richard decided to retire and settle in Australia. He soon realised that retirement was not for him and became involved in marketing hydroponics. After spending nine interesting years working in real estate, Richard moved to the Gold Coast where he developed and patented an attachment for small boats. Finally, to pay for all his past sins, Richard started to write and publish books and short stories. Once Upon a Bridge is a trilogy, the three parts of which have already been published separately. The trilogy follows the journey of Marçel, firstly as a teenager, then as a young man coping with the vicissitudes and indeed, horrors of war, to its dramatic, moving and totally unexpected finale.
