outstanding, unique museum collection of ritual Asian oil lamps

The 77 pictured lamps and burners out of a total of over 100 donated by a collector to the Fowler Museum "offer a glimpse into the complexities of the symbolic and ritual systems that dominate daily life in South Asia." Most of the lamps are from India, with the next largest group from Nepal and Tibet, and a few from the Southeast Asia countries of Vietnam, Cambodia, and Indonesia. The oldest ones comes from these latter countries. The large majority of the lamps and burners are from the 19th and 20th centuries. There is not a marked difference between older and later Hindu and Buddhist ritual objects as to spiritual figures depicted, shapes, and design details. The objects don't change as in the Western concept of "art styles" or "historical period styles" for instance. What differences there are are that the later ones, of the 20th century, have somewhat more complexity, or sophistication, in their detail presumably from advanced tools and the use of advanced, more modern, machinery in the making of them. The author Anderson with a background in architecture and design discusses the cultural background, use, and production of the Asian lamps and burners. Besides the age of the particular objects, photo captions concisely identify figures in them, what is distinctive as applicable, and how they would be used. The knowledge of the Indian collector of the numerous objects making for the exceptional, broad collection makes the work, though limited in subject matter, especially useful as an introduction and guide to the lamps and burners.

A Wonderful Debut

At turns crass and cerebral, "Big in Japan" captures the distinctive blend of ambivilence and desperation that characterizes the transition from childhood to adulthood.

It's risky to place an emotionally stunted character at the apex of a novel, and Brain Tesdesco is nothing if not stunted. But Gammarino imbued him with a naked vulnerability that was both endearing and relatable. Even when Brain's behavior crosses the line from self-defeating into selfish and cruel, I couldn't write him off as just another man behaving badly. His motivations were far too complex and his psyche too broken for me to turn on him. Gammarino deserves a world of credit for creating a character whose humanity is never eclipsed by his moronic behavior.

Brain's insatiable desire to do and be something more than the anxious, insecure, angry boy that he is leads him to a life of debauchery. He gluts himself on sex until the activity becomes toxic; a mechanical act that he no longer enjoys but can't bring himself to stop. At it's core "Big in Japan" isn't just a coming-of-age story. It isn't just about sex or sexism or fetishism. It's about learning to balance the desires of the body with those of the heart.

Gammarino's writing is strong and evocative. Normally, I'm a serial reader. I finish one book and dive straight into another. I couldn't do that with Big in Japan. I had to take two days to emotionally process the story before I could bring myself to start a new book, that's how much it got to me.

A Ghost Story With Life We Can Relate To

The best books are ones that affect us beyond the sum of their story line. While Big In Japan is an admittedly fun, casual and sometimes absurd tale of a young musician seeking to strike it big with his band, the real value of this book comes from the remarkable ways in which its protagonist represents those emotions and troubles that are so often ignored in stories of budding rock stars.

I might start by saying that I've worked in the music industry for years. As a result I found myself challenging Brain Tedesco - our leading man - on his imaginary perspective of the world of music. If he mentioned a band, I double checked with myself to make sure I had an opinion on it. We've all read books where we sympathized with a character, but this is the first time that I've found myself actively negotiating with the pages I was reading, as though I could somehow persuade the plot line or distract it from the next inevitable twist just long enough to argue a detail about a particular rock band. (In fact, it turns out that Brain and I had a lot in common in terms of musical taste.) This was the first sign I had that Gammarino had really hit something on the head in constructing his character.

The real grace of this book, however, comes from Brain's inner struggle with growing up. As he struggles to find a way to move his band forward, he gets lost in his own process of maturation. He's incredibly thoughtful, but is often too careless and crass with his emotions, too pompous to set himself aside and recognize his responsibilities to himself and those around him. Like so many other stories of rock stars, he becomes obsessed with a sort of destiny that he feels is owed to him and attempts to reap the rewards of his existence without properly working for them. Most notably, he dives head first into a world bubbling with perverted sexuality, barely masking his need for love and connection at a time when he has none, even with himself. As always, part of this is circumstantial; but by the end of the story we find that even he recognizes that the biggest holes in his life are ones that could have been avoided. Until the final pages, it isn't apparent why Big In Japan is subtitled "A Ghost Story." At the end of the book however, when we evaluate where Brain has been and how he has perceived his journey through life, it's easy for anyone to remember a time in their life when they've felt similarly. Feelings of remorse, frustration, and a yearning to not be left alone are central to Brain's ambitions. As the reader we may have different goals in life, but we can all relate to the crushing reality of feeling defeated by those things we are most passionate about. Although Brain's situation is unique, his story is personal to us all.

I really connected with it, being an indie musician myself from Philly who has traveled to Japan. I'm still thinking about it daily and it's been a few weeks since I finished it. Gammarino is a GREAT writer. I highly recommend this book, I think it has a lot to offer for different types of readers.

The BEST ACT/SAT Study Guide on the Market!

Before reading this book, I was lost on the ACT/SAT. The types of questions, especially on the math portion, always confused me. I bought book after book, but most them helped very little. I tried Kaplan's programs, however they often simply frustrated me more with little change in my scores. Finally, I found The Math Study Guide and it blew me away. The way things are explained in this book make the ACT/SAT much less scary. Each test (ACT, SAT, and SAT Subject Tests) has its own section with hints, tips and examples for which ever test you're studying for. These come in really handy when taking the test, and they definitely boosted my score. I believe that it is because of this book that I did so well on the ACT and am going to college.

In short, Mr. Corn did a fantastic job at making an ACT/SAT study book which is approachable, friendly and is packed full of information which will help anyone struggling with math on the ACT/SAT raise their score. I cannot recommend this product enough! A++

Believe it or Not

"Believe it or Not," this book has only 157 pages, but I must agree with the two previous reviewers: it is excellent, and I will be recommending it to all my students. The book offers the math basics required for the tests in the best and most user-friendly form I have encountered in many years helping students with these exams.

The pages do not contain lots of dense text, and the illustrations and key facts are presented more clearly than any of the other books I have used. Each of the seven chapters contains several pages of explanation, a page or so of problems, and solutions to the problems immediately following the problems, so one does not have to jump back and forth from problems to answers and explanations.

The author wisely takes the reader / student back to middle school math for a quick review of basic concepts. He also offers very clear instructions on how to plug problems into the scientific calculator (it looks like the TI-83 or 83+ to me).

Two final very positive features are the list of websites for more information and practice tests and the websites to report errors in the book and see the errata posted. This last feature is a wonderful advance from the early Kaplan 2400 (with many misprints) and The Official SAT of 2009 that included a printed insert of errata.

If one needs more practice, one can always buy a book of practice tests and preparation material, and lug around almost 1000 pages.

Excellent Resource

As an experienced test preparation coach, I know first-hand how hard it is to find accurate and thorough material for students to use. Richard Corn's book streamlines math preparation by putting all the information in a single book, rather than tackling each test (SAT, ACT, SAT Math Subject tests) separately. As an experienced tutor himself, Corn is meticulous about updating his book regularly to accurately reflect the content and difficulty of the math problems tested. Each subject is reviewed in roughly two pages, followed by practice problems and explanations. It is efficient and effective. Besides the 'real' test books (The Official SAT Study Guide and The Real ACT Test Prep Guide), this is the only book I recommend to students who need a solid math overview.

Nothing to do with Hidalgo story or movie

Incredible story

The reviewer who rated this book one star because it mentions Hidalgo was unfair. There is indeed a connection to the recent movie Hidalgo. That was the story of a horse crossing the Sahara, this is the story of horses crossing the Atacama. In the preface, the authors mention watching Hidalgo, the movie, and saw "...moments of our own lives on the trail played out on screen;....our own dispair, our own relationship to our horses, our own journey. We use 'Hidalgo' in the title to help you find us." If the title helps even one person find this book who would not otherwise have, it was a good choice, because this true story deserves to be more widely known. I also read the authors' longer book "Riding into the Wind on Horseback Out of Patagonia" and was afraid this would simply be an excerpt of that, but it is not. Although a few entries are duplicates, of course, most of this book, since it focuses just on the Atacama desert crossing, is new material with more detail than the previous book, and many more pictures.

But this is more than an adventure story. The Footes have a lot of useful insights, most still relevant today. Give this story a try. If you like it, get "Riding into the Wind." Hopefully the sequel to Riding will be published one day, to finish the story of the journey from the Mexican border to Canada.

An Amazing True Story

Wow! This book is absolutely amazing. To think Nathan and Elly Foote actually did this boggles the mind, and stories like this you just can't make up. An amazing tale of survival while crossing drought-striken landscape and true desert as well. Anyone who enjoyed movies like "Hidalgo", and "Bite the Bullet", and loved books like "Seabiscuit" and other amazing equine related tales will consider "Hidalgo: The Desert Diaries" a must-own!

This is a pick up and read devotional that starts my day with a bang. Not only are the 2-3 page devotionals insightful they always speak to the heart of my problem. They do not have to be read in order but are well organized into categories. All the Scriptures are from the Old Testament. Hebrew words are included and explained. I can't recommend it more highly. It really helped me through some difficult situations.
