Terrific guide to a new way to save for college.

Highly recommended. This is the first comprehensive analysis that I've seen of an extremely important and relatively new way to save on a tax-deferred basis for your children's or grandchildren's college expenses. It's well-written, comprehensive, and objective, and it gave me enough data to make an informed decision. Before I opened the book, I had researched New York's plan through another source; I was delighted to see the discussion in this book present all of the plan's features (pro and con) that I had discovered--and more.
I haven't met the author (Joseph Hurley). But when I e-mailed a question to him at the address published in the book, I received a thorough and helpful answer later the same day. That's great service from the author of an exceptionally valuable guide.

Most useful information omitted

This book is fine for people who have never heard of a 529 plan. However, for people who would like to compare 529 plans in order to choose the best investment vehicle for college savings will be sadly disappointed. The book offers a checklist of questions to ask about state 529 plans, yet, in the description of each plan, none of these questions are answered. This requires that you look up or contact each plan individually in order to get these questions answered such as whether the plan allows rollovers, if the plan is IRS qualified and if the plan accepts contributions from non-owners, etc. Also, most people comparing 529 plans would like some general idea of how popular each fund is and how well it has been perfomring recently. The author could have easily summarized this information generally for each plan but chose not to, again, leaving it to the reader to research each plan individually. I would not recommend this book. The information given about each 529 state plan is almost identical across states and, again, information that would distinguish each plan from another is omitted.

Excellent overview of strategies/options for saving for college (not just 529 plans)

This book clarified several doubts, myths and misconceptions about 529 plans. I was concerned that the book only discussed 529 plans (because of the subtitle), but even though 529 plans are the main topic covered, it also talks about other options (UGMA/UTMA accounts, Coverdell ESAs, etc.) compares and contrasts them.

The book is clearly written and explains financial and tax details of 529 plans at a level most readers will easily understand. You should buy the latest edition (2007) as it contains the most updated information. For instance it mentions about the pension bill that extended the tax-free account withdrawals for 529s beyond 2010.

I was also very happy about the detailed chapter on tax benefits. It mentions several unique features of some plans, for instance the fact that if you are a resident of the state of Pennsylvania, you can now deduct contributions (up to $12,000) to any 529 plan from your state income tax.

About a third of the book has an overview of 529 plans offered by each state, while useful, this information is also available in the companion [...], which also happens to be an excellent resource. In my wish list for this book I would include access to the premium content on the companion website.

I really enjoyed His Majesty Requests: An Invitation to the Royal Marriage to the Lamb of God, but this one has over 21 more pages and many new sections explaining the Hebrew wedding customs. It touched my heart and I really loved it!

Once Good now dated!

I purchased this book recently (Feb 2009) because I thought it would help with getting the current 10 & 11 Oracle OCA & OCP certifications as a DBA. The book is written for Oracle versions 8 & 9. It does have a few good hints in it that I have not seen in other books.
My opinion - for current certification classes and this book is very dated. For the person who wants to find a nice non Oracle OCA - OCP study book this is not it. The author and editor really need to be on the third edition of this book now. For a DBA or an instructor, this book would be of little use.

Do Away With All Your Lists!

This home reference book is the best purchase I've made for years. As a homeowner who does most of the renovating/decorating of my own home and also as a rental property owner who does most of the work myself this book has been a God-send. I used to have so many lists that when it came time to buy something I could never find the right list or the right measurement. Now it's all in the Sidekick, a book that's easy to carry into the stores with me. I keep it handy at all times. When I work on the rental properties I have it with me so that I can record measurements, draw sketches of plans etc. I have two books right now and plan on buying a couple more so that it can accomodate the number of properties I own/manage. Thank you Diane for a great idea and a great book. This book should be in every home.

Best home organizer I've seen

This organizer has something all the others are missing - actually, many things. My favorite is all the clear pockets to hold samples and receipts. They reseal so even when I drop the book, nothing falls out. My wife does much of the entries, but I use it all the time. We never go shopping without it in our car. It has saved me many trips back home to check dimensions and colors. We are going to give these as housewarming gifts.

This is the perfect system for any home owner. We've used the Sidekick with a new home as we were decorating - -it saved me from constant frustration and headache, trying to remember sizes, colors, etc. I left a completed Sidekick for the buyers of our home - - now we're starting again - and I am definitely using the Sidekick again.

Good product for parents...

This is a great introduction for parents that don't know sign. I know a bit but my wife doesn't know any and these cards have been a good introduction for her and a good way to help her use the signs with our baby.

I can only give 4 stars, however, because the material the cards are made of is pretty flimsy...especially when the baby gets ahold of them. And since the purpose is for both the parents and the baby to see and use the cards, I can't understand why the cards don't come laminated.

Fortunately, I saw a suggestion online to get the cards laminated BEFORE showing them to the baby. I took the cards to Kinko's and got them laminated in about 10 minutes for less than $10. And then my wife and I had to cut the cards out ourselves. I would recommend you consider the cost and time of lamination for these cards if you plan to let your baby even look at them.

I have 4 or 5 of the books on signing for babies. Most of them are very good, however they can be bulky to carry around and tend to get lost in the piles of all the books I am reading. They can also be overwhelming since they cover so many signs, it is hard to know where to begin. These cards are very handy and I can take them with me whenever I want to review them. We have used them to review the signs with our family members so they are also ready when our child arrives. They are very easy to use. I imagine they will also be very easy for our children to learn from because they are set up with a picture of the object or action on one side and a picture of how to do the sign on the opposite side. I also appreciate they are ASL and not an adaptation of the ASL signs. I'll be buying the next set of cards soon. I highly recommend them.

What a great idea...

I have purchased two of this set and also two of Set 2 for my granddaughters' babies. My great-grandson, who is now two, learned to sign and was able to tell his parents what he wanted way before he talked. And it was the cutest thing you ever saw...to watch him. My newest great-granddaughter is too young but my granddaughter can't wait to teach her to sign. Wish they had these when I was a new mom.

About the Author
For 19 years Michael Shumate has been Professor of Graphic Design and Illustration at St. Lawrence College in Kingston, Ontario where he has taught Color Theory, all levels of Illustration, Branding Design, Art History and Beginning Web Applications. Shumate has been a graphic designer and commercial illustrator for over 35 years. Before becoming a teacher, he was Senior Designer/Illustrator for a mid-sized design studio and advertising agency. Michael's illustration work has been used for such clients as British Airways Magazine, Kelley Services and Macmillan McGraw-Hill publishers.

First volume of, hopefully, two

This short and very readable book is drawn from the author's experiences teaching art in college. Although mildly motivational, it lacks the pretense of many motivational books. It concentrates mainly on the ideas and attitudes will help an aspiring artist actually to become an artist and includes a few excellent quotes. Shumate addresses all practitioners of the arts, including visual artists, actors, writers, and musicians. There is a lot of good common sense in this book, which is necessary these days because common sense is in such short supply. Shumate urges people to work hard at their art, and to practice virtue and eschew the tendency to feel sorry for oneself, or to focus too heavily on oneself. In this day and age, this is sound advice because in many places, schools train prima donnas, not achievers. The one thing I missed, and a major reason I bought the book, was information on how to locate people who are in a position to advance the artist's career, and how to find resources likely to lead to such people. Obviously, Shumate has been successful in accomplishing this, and I hoped he would share his secrets. Though I had pretty much learned many of the things he discusses by the time I read the book, I did get some valuable ideas from it just the same. One should never be too proud to learn from experienced people. But the question for which I sought an answer was, where does the artist go from here? I sincerely hope that Shumate will write a "sequel" that includes this information.

A valuable resource for any aspiring artist (whetever their field).

I found "Success In The Arts: What it Takes to Make It In Creative Fields" to be an entertaining, interesting and informative book which should help any aspiring artist, whatever their chosen field in the arts, to avoid the pitfalls that have swallowed the less fortunate.

With a wealth of experience as a creative illustrator and graphic designer, Michael has paid his dues, and reaped the rewards in his creative field.

He makes it abundantly clear in his book that talent alone is no guarantee for success in the arts. Indeed, latent talent may not even be the most important requirement. The book is divided into three parts, each of which cover the three major components necessary to make a success in creative fields - these are: talent, heart, and smarts. Each is very clearly explained in detail, with pearls of wisdom on just about every page.

"Success In The Arts: What it Takes to Make It In Creative Fields" will make a valuable resource for anyone with ideas of using their creative ability to survive in the demanding world of artistic endeavour; but it goes a lot deeper too. This book certainly is a valuable guide for life in the arts, and in the process, Michael wrote a guide for the art of life, too.
