About the Author
Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche was born in Rabshu in the province of Kham in eastern Tibet. He was born at sunrise on Mahakala Day, the twenty-ninth day of the second month in the Year of the Wood Mouse, 1924. On this day, very early in the morning, Rinpoche's mother went to fetch water from the stream, carrying the full vessel of water home. Rinpoche was then born with no pain to his mother.

Excellent teachings on ngondro

This book gives excellent teacings on ngondro, the preliminary practices of Vajrayana Buddhism. Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche is one of the great living masters of the Karma Kagyu lineage of Marpa, Milarepa, and Gampopa. This text is taken from oral instructions during a retreat and has useful question and answer sections at the end of each chapter. This text does not include the original text of Karma Chakme's Mountain Dharma- this will be released in a separate volume. There are currently three volumes available with a fourth volume soon to come. This book is a must have for new students to Tibetan Buddhism.

Not only not a translation ...

but unfortunately also full of mistakes. I have had the chance to study one of the chapters of Karma Chagme's excellent Ri-chos with a Tibetan master and now compared my translation with what one find's in this book. I am sad to have to say that I found a great number of inaccuracies and even glaring mistakes. The book is not much more than a loose teaching on some (by far not all!) themes mentioned in the Tibetan text. One must ask at this point, who introduced all the mistakes? I can hardly imagine that the Khenpo was responsible, since some of these mistakes show a complete misreading of the text. Something must have gone wrong in the process of translation. A great disappointment. I would not recommend this book for study at all.

Delightful

This is a collection of 56 short essays on topics, both current and eternal, that affect the Church. I found it best to savor each individually, like a delicious chocolate with a creamy center, rather than read the entire book at once. But this heightened the enjoyment, for I then had something witty to read on those occasions when I had only a few moments to spare. As with Ahlquist's other books, Chesterton fans will find a goldmine here. This is one of the few books I am keeping on my regular list instead of storing in the Kindle Archive so each chapter will be readily available to enjoy again and again.

About the Author
Jill Alison Ganon is a co-author of Hometown Pasadena and the author of several books for HarperCollins, including Twins! Pregnancy, Birth and the First Year of Life. A former managing editor of American Bungalow, she lives in an Arts & Crafts house in Southwest Pasadena.

Sandy Gillis is a co-author of Hometown Pasadena as well as a wholesale florist, garden consultant and all-around horticulturist. She lives in Altadena, where she grows roses and raises chickens and children (not necessarily in that order).

Jennifer Cheung is a third-generation commercial photographer and graduate of Art Center College of Design. Some of her clients include Garden Design, AOL, Sunset and Behr Paints. She and her partner, Steven Nilsson, work together on various editorial and advertising projects.

Photographer Steven Nilsson was born and raised in Minneapolis and came west to attend Art Center College of Design. Some of his clients include Travel & Leisure, Los Angeles and MGM. Poor execution

They crammed in too many photographs, many too small, many just not great shots, and many missed moments to connect the text and image. (If you're going to talk about an interesting element in a home, why isn't there a complimentary photograph?) Also, the image formatting isn't reader friendly - all the photo collages are a real chore to look at. I like more wide shots, this has too many vignette close-ups. The text is OK. If you're a fan of seeing quirks like "fantabulous" in print, you might get a bigger kick out of it than me.

I wouldn't recommend this book at all. Sorry. As a Pasadenan, I really wanted to like it, but, NO!

Today, we are bombarded by so much spin and lies that it is hard to figure out what the truth on ANY matter is. Events are staged, elections are rigged, and politicians and economists are declaring publicly anything that comes to their minds just to keep power. Well, lies have no part in the Sanctus Germanus Prophecies. I have no reason to spread any more lies. In fact, with the perspective of the Great Brotherhood of Light gives us from the spiritual dimensions, we can see through the LIES no matter how they are dressed.

I admit that some of the Sanctus Germanus Prophecies sounds a bit like Sci-Fi. I also admit that I stopped more than once in the middle of a dictation of the Sanctus Germanus Prophecies and asked, "Hey, how do I know what you're telling me the truth? This sounds too far out." And some information did to the mind of businessman who was not too long before shipping medical supplies out of Shanghai! But their answer made perfect sense: "How can we prove the future to you? You'll have to wait to see how the events unfold."

So that was more than four years ago. Since then what has happened?

· The Brotherhood authorized us to expose once and for all the existence of a hardened organization of Dark Forces that control all the money in the world and is behind all the warmongering going on for centuries. Their existence is now speculation in the press.
· The truth about 911 is gradually seeping out. Less and less of the public believes the rendition the media play up
· Insanity has gripped the planet as it accelerates. More people are, well, going nuts. The nearest and dearest are turning on each other.
· The DF stole $35 trillion from retirees and they're still wondering what happened as they line up to work at MacDonald's.
· The war in Iraq has been raging, but only as a prelude to the big one. That's in the making.
· More immediate and something that will reach into each of your pocketbooks and wallets, the world economy stands at the brink of a major crash. All central bank band-aids to prop it up have been exhausted . Major surgery on the corpse is too late. Hang on.

How do All these scattered occurrences hang together? This is what the Sanctus Germanus Prophecies explains. The ideas for this book were transmitted to me from higher dimensions. As I wrote the predictions contained in this book, I said, "Hey wait a minute! How do I know if what you're telling will come about?" The answer: "We can't argue about the future from your perspective. You will see." That was four years ago, and all predictions are now unfolding as mapped out in the Sanctus Germanus Prophecies.

Outstanding - The only one on the market today revealing truth as it is.

A very courageous and accurate account of what is really going on in the world of politics and economy today. Dr. Mau explains the forces behind current world events - the causes and the consequences of manipulation of the ignorant-at-large humanity - placing them in the light of an occult knowledge. I read the book for the first time when it was published in spring of 2002 and then it was a prophecy that some would laugh at and mock. Today, it stands already as partially fulfilled prophecy - with the prices of precious metals nearly doubled since 2002 and the real estate markets collapsing. If you wish to become well informed about the play of the forces in the world today - you must read Dr. Mau's books. Both volumes 1 and 2 are a light torch of truth placed in the world of confusion, evident now to all. This is a must read for all concerned with their future.

Interesting read, a real page turner!!!

This book turned out to be a real page turner. After reading about the author on the back of the book, I thought Michael Mau a New World Order guy given the fact he worked for the World Bank, United Nations, Foreign Service, etc. He does talk about a new world order but without the Dark Forces, who are souls that are into causing war for profit and making vaste sums of money to control people. He talks about time speeding up driving off the Dark Forces out of the earth plane by 2012 to leave only souls of a higher level. The souls that are left after 2012 will be led by a world leader to a new golden age. It sounds like a nice dream to me and I am hoping what he says comes true but I won't be holding my breath either. The most interesting part is the allegation that Jimmy Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and other musicians from woodstock were murdered in 1970 by the Dark Forces who thought these musicians too much of a threat to their future war plans. I recommend this book highly as it is a real page turner.

No sanctu.

Surely, we all should pay attention to the vibrations of a troubled planet that seem to be overtaking us in the twilight of our Piscean age, and the mystic dreamers among us will most likely enjoy this book. However, The Sanctus Germanus Prophecies, while an undeniably accurate overview of our current plight, seems to be yet another metaphysical reformulation of the dark history of secret societies, and the evil underworld of central banking elites that have held us hostage since long before the entrance of Adam Weishaupt and the Iluminati. It also subtly borrows from Christian teachings in a way that I found uncomfortable, feeling more like a prelude to the reign of the anti-Christ rather than the transcendant relevatory transformation which all Godly beings embrace. Dr. Mau also lends a world government vision to his "prophecies" in sections with headings like: Making of a New World Union [Order], New World Constitution [U.N.], Passing of the Nation State, and Law of Hierarchy. In the context of the book, these are troubling visions and detract from the transcendant thought that Dr. Mau supposedly professes. I guess we should expect no less given his acknowledged past association with such institutions as the elitist United Nations (within who's charter can be found a socialistic pan-national version of our U.S. Constitution), the hegemonic global vision of the U.S.A.I.D. (U.S. Agency for International Development), and the World Bank. I would hope that he found this untidy association with Pax Americana to be a burdenous one on his path to mysticism.
While I am open to metaphysical extrapolations based on well researched subjects, this (surprisingly) poorly edited work is an eschatological melange that did little to prepare me for climbing the "Sacred Tree."

Top Maui Restaurants from Thrifty to Four Star

This book is one of two guidebooks to Maui that we consider a must. Unlike the free guides readily available everywhere, the authors give you the straight scoop on a whole range of restaurants. It is very easy on Maui to find terrible restaurants and leave feeling ripped off. Even the bad ones are expensive. This guide led us to several places we would not otherwise have given a second look. Just one example: Gian Don's. This very attractive restaurant with its comfortable outside seating looks totally out of place overlooking noisy Kihei Road. Following the authors' suggestions we ordered the appetizer ribs and a salad and were very happy with the portions and the prices. Without this book, we would never have tried Gian Don's much less ordered ribs in an Italian restaurant. This wonderful, entertaining guide was worth every penny. It will be on our short list of "must brings" to Maui--unless there is a new version out.

One delicious meal after another!

We just returned from Maui with a well used copy of this book! We are VERY frequent visitors to Maui (about three times a year). I loved James and Molly's story, their passion for each other and for great food! I appreciate the fact that they are sharing their dining experiences with us (the readers). I highly suggest this book to anyone visiting or living on Maui!

I admit I peeked ahead to see what they thought of my favorite Maui restaurants and it helped me "trust" them to realize we shared similar tastes! Then I read the book cover to cover. Later I downloaded the latest edition. The book paid for itself the first new place we tried, which happened to be Cilantro Fresh Mexican Grill in Lahaina. Having lived in Hawai'i and also places that have some excellent Mexican food (Texas, California, Arizona and MEXICO)...in my opinion, this is the best Mexican food in all of Hawai'i, of course I am open to continue to try other places just to make sure. As it is often difficult to find an affordable dinner on Maui, this was a great place to discover.

Another time we wanted to kiss the book in thanks was after the first bite at Flatbread Company in Pa'ia. I cannot have gluten/wheat, so I had to skip the pizza, but I so enjoyed watching my husband and youngest daughter eat it. My daughter agreed that it was a "spiritual experience!" I enjoyed a salad with the yummy pineapple vinaigrette dressing! The lemonade was a little too tart for us, but loved the iced tea. My husband loved the pomegranate ginger mojito. The desserts were amazing, especially with their homemade whipped cream (sweetened with maple syrup). We found the service to be excellent, too!

Many places we had driven by on former trips and always wondered about. This book gave us the nudge to go ahead and try some of these places, as follows:
Longhi's - The steak WAS awesome, just as the book said. It was also one of the best breakfasts we had (even though Plantation House continues to be our favorite place). My husband thought it was the best french toast on the island. My daughter enjoyed the huge cinnamon roll.
Cafe O Lei - Great place for lunch, just as the book said. We loved the shave ice place downstairs, too!
Maui Tacos - Just figured it was typical fast food, so always avoided. After reading the review, we gave it a try. It was fresh and tasty and a perfect quick meal on the way to a movie.
Mala in Wailea - I appreciate all their organic items on the menu! The organic chicken was ONO!
I'O - It is now our top Lahaina restaurant, too! (Have enjoyed Pacific'o and Feast of Lele in the past.)

We did have two semi-disappointing meals this trip. I should say ONLY two, as we often have many more than that. Thankfully, this book helped us avoid most of those! And I do realize that every restaurant has an off day. Perhaps it was an off day for these two places? After waiting a while in the rain for the Gazebo, we felt it was not worth the wait. The view IS amazing, but you can get the view from the other side of the beach at the Sea House. The food seemed to be typical "diner" food. To me, it tasted like something you'd get at Denny's. It was not bad, but not great either. My husband and daughter had the pancakes and were disappointed. We much prefer Sea House or Plantation House for breakfast in that area (or Longhi's and SeaWatch further away). We had one night to have a romantic dinner, just my husband and I. We decided to try Pineapple Grill. We did not feel the view compared to the view at Plantation House (perhaps it was where we were seated). The service was excellent. The food was good. However, it was so noisy be could hardly hear each other. It was not too crowded, although there was one large group. We decided we did not like yelling at each other from across the table and did not stay for dessert.

Overall it was one ONO meal after another! We enjoyed adding some new winners to the restaurants we already enjoyed on Maui!

Makin' it so easy...!

Not having visited Maui in 30 years, I had no idea where our family of four would be able to eat at reasonable prices. Given the fact that Hawaii, in general is so expensive, this wonderful book not only gave a comprehensive and entertaining review of Maui's offerings, but it was organized, thorough and easy to use as a daily guide...which we will for the next two weeks!

This book made an important part of our trip less challenging and took away the stress and frustration of trying to find nice, clean and reasonably priced restaurants.

I am so very glad we purchased this book -- I recommend it highly -- no one should travel to Maui without it!

Enjoyable read.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the haunted history of Virginia City and Gold Hill. I gave it 4 stars rather than 5 because at some points it became difficult to tell where one story ended and another began. Some sort of separation, perhaps headings or even a brief background on the storyteller would be nice.

A must read for Ghost Enthusists!

I have always had an interest in the ghosts and things that go bump in the night. This book was recommended to me by a friend, and I must say, was worth it's weight in gold! Every time I tell people about it and let them read some of it, they want to borrow my copy.
Comstock Phantoms is an amazing look at the history of the Virginia City area. This is no ordinary "I have a ghost story" book. This book has what all those other ghost books lack....historical reference! From the Blue Lady of the Old Washoe club, to the basic graveyard haunts, this author backs up the stories of the area with historical facts. He even takes the time to document his sources.
This book is not only entertaining, the historic sections bring to life the haunted areas, and makes it that much easier to beleive that the ghosts are real, and not just some made up tales to raise the hairs on your neck.
In addition, the ghost hunts the author goes on are wonderfully written and enertaining; closing the loop on the histrical past to the present. His descriptions take you right into the present day buildings and cemetaries.
Does he find a ghost? I'll let you buy it and find out.

Entertaining and Enlightening Comstock Phantoms

Brian Bruns has written a very entertaining book on the Comstock Ghosts and Hauntings. He has wrapped his own ghost hunting experiences into a book that is spooky as well as historical. It has been a pleasure to pass on my copy (and buy another for myself and also another for my daughter) to my daughter-in-law who also could not put it down.

On visiting Virginia City and the the Comstock area, you can put the buildings and locations together with their ghostly inhabitants thanks to Mr. Bruns. Mr Bruns writing style is refreshing and lively. His experiences are both humorous and well told making you feel like he is in the room talking to you instead of the reader just reading a book. I am still taking photos to see if the Blue Lady will make an appearance on film!

If you are planning a trip to this area or even if you are a Nevadan, this is a book worth reading and keeping as a guide to some of the events and places of our historical past that are evidently still making an impression on our present day.

I am eagerly awaiting Brian's next endeavors!!!!!

My to go book for new product development

I've been using MDPD for many years and it truly works. I use this book as a reference and I've been giving it to many of the people that I work with as a gift or to teach others how to truly listen to customers and translate their voices to right requirements and come up with products that will delight customers.

Great foundation for a product development process

This book lays out a step-by-step approach for new product development. I like the way they do their surveys and customer visits.
The first 1/3 of the book was a little dry, but the book overall is very easy to read. It was hard to put down as I was very interested in how they would put the whole process together. Some of the examples and tables needed more explanation. They were not as clear as they could have been. But overall this is a highly recomended book. Probably a MUST READ.
Although this book is largely "on target" in terms of how to organize your customer-centric approach to product development... I think it lacks certain human intuitive points. For example, there was no discussion of the name of the product, nor much on ergonomics. This book needs to be read in conjunction of those by Barry Feig and Doug Hall.
In this regard, I would think that a company like HP would use this type of approach, but not Steve Jobs of Apple.
I learned several important quantitative approaches to measuring what the customer wants. But at the same time I think their quantitative approach may be somewhat utopian. For example, when you do your customer visits and later your surveys, you may find that you discover something new... so you scramble and change your questions to proceed further. This would mess up the data in their approach. Thus, I think the process is a little more messy in real life. And, for really important decisions, intuition plays a greater role. I don't think I made up a matrix decision chart when I decided to marry my wife. There are alot of decisions that are like this in the product development area.
Another area where I had trouble was in the use of "value mapping" analysis in doing trade offs for deciding what features need to be included. This is another one of those cases of over-relying on the matrix approach. Suppossedly we are to determine a customer value -- either on productivity improvements, cost reduction or other subjective judgements. Well, let me tell you, this is ripe for serious manipulation. All you can do is get the customer to react to your designs. You need to read the Barry Feig books for more discussion on this.
However, I will use their quantitative approach in my next product development quest, realizing that it may get messed up a little. I really liked their discussion of how to do questionaires (the Kano method was terrific).
I thought their discussion of developing customer images was also great, but I got the feeling that this was not the author's forte, as this was more intuitive type of thing. Regardless, this was valable to me and I'm glad they included this in the book.
Perhaps most important to me was their confirmation that the biggest reason for missing the customer's desires... was FAILURE TO PROBE. I wholeheartedly agree. That's one of the reasons I laugh when I see the mall interviewers asking all those closed-questions. The author does a great job of discussion this.
The author, Sheila Mello, passes my test for a business author: she is a consultant in the field. This is not a book by some college professor preaching his hands-off theories.
There was a lot that I agreed with in this book, and there was a lot of important ideas that I picked up, and will implement next time. I recommend that this book be read before the Feig and Hall books to provide you a base foundation for your approach.
Highly recomended book, if not MUST READ.

It is the Key!!!

Customer Centric Product Definition is a terrific book! It defines the steps necessary for achieving successful product development, which starts at the beginning with the definition of the product. The company case histories included illuminates the absolute necessity to follow a rigorous and robust product definition process as developed by Sheila Mello. I have been in the product development area throughout my entire career and this is the first time, a thorough and documented process for demystifying the "fuzzy", but crucial front-end of product development has been offered. Unlike many books written on product development it does not just pay lip service to identifying the crucially important needs of the customer. I came away with a blueprint, something I could immediately use, for defining products from the customers perspective and identify both stated and latent customer requirements. I highly recommend it for anyone involved in the product development process. It should be "must" reading for all business executives for understanding the necessity of clearly getting this phase of product development - right. Two thumbs up to Sheila!
