Review
In Ireland's Comfort Food & Touring Attractions, author Viki Pidgeon has compiled an impressive and very nicely illustrated collection of do-it-yourself recipes for soups, stews, chowders and casseroles that she has collected from Irish Chefs from Kylemore Abbey, to Belleek Pottery, to the Guinness Storehouse, with informative descriptions of a variety of Ireland's tourist attractions, pubs, hotels, and castles - each of which has some direct relevance to the culinary theme of this unique compendium of Irish culinary traditions. From Grandma Murphy's Broccoli & Blue Cheese Soup; Spicy Guinness Lamb Stew; Seafood Chowder-Smugglers Style; to Michael & Mary's Pot Roast Pheasant; Ham & Cheese Bread Pudding; and Connemara Braised Lamb Shanks, Ireland's Comfort Food & Touring Attractions is a very highly recommended addition to personal and community library ethnic cookbook collections - as well as being an inspiring supplemental resource for planning the itinerary of a trip to Ireland! --The Midwest Book Review

WOW! who said a cookbook is a cookbook is a cookbook? Viki Pidgeon's newest gastronomic delight is far from 'just a cookbook.' It is an intimate look at Ireland through the eyes, photographs and experiences of a woman who clearly loves Ireland and is passionate about its food. As the book's title so aptly states, the author has combined the best of all worlds. Carefully selecting recipes from some of Ireland's best chefs and eateries, the author goes a step further. She takes the reader along as she attends a month-long diploma course at the Belle Isle School of Cookery near Enniskillen, County Fermanagh. As a special bonus, the travel-savvy Pidgeon offers us unique insights into Irish life, customs, places and especially its people. The book is as much a food critic's diary of a month spent living, learning and experiencing foods from all over Ireland as it is a carefully selected collection of recipes. Holding true to the theme of Irish 'comfort foods', the book features a mouth-watering collection of soups, stews, chowders and casseroles that will bring the tastes of Ireland alive to those gathered around your table. Pidgeon's selections reflect an Ireland whose culinary offerings have greatly expanded and matured in recent years. Inspired by the best of traditional local dishes, each has been creatively influenced by today's evolving Irish cuisine. A delightful book to enjoy on its own or to share with others, Ireland's Comfort Food & Touring Attractions makes a welcome edition to any kitchen bookshelf. It brings the dining essence of the Emerald Isle just a few miles closer as it warand satisfies the cockles of any 'Irish' heart. --Cathal Liam - Award winning author

Viki Pidgeon loves Ireland. "I love everything about it," she says, "the beautiful countryside, the castles, the small farms, the pubs - and especially the food!" The Louisville author's affinity for the Emerald Isle has resulted in the publication of a new cookbook, Ireland's Comfort Food & Touring Attractions, which came out in December of 2007. With more than 60 authentic Irish recipes spread out over some 140 pages with appealing color photographs and useful information for the tourist, this book will come in handy for both those planning their next St. Patrick's Day meal or those wanting to organize a sight-seeing jaunt through the verdant counties of Ireland. Pidgeon's love affair with the land of William Butler Yeats, James Joyce and George Bernard Shaw began after she and her husband, Barney, traveled there to visit the home of his grandfather. Since that day, she has dreamed of having her own place in Ireland and tries to spend at least part of each year exploring its rugged countryside and remote villages. "We both hold dual citizenship now - Irish and American," she says, "and it was during one of our holidays in Ireland that I was inspired to gather recipes and compile a book of Irish flavors. "That book, Deliciously Irish, was published in 2004 and would pave the way for her most recent endeavor, Ireland's Comfort Food & Touring Attractions. Since comfort food features so prominently in the title, it comes as no surprise that the majority of the recipes showcase the abundant soups, stews, chowders and casseroles found on dinner tables throughout Ireland, or Eire, as it's known to many locals. Appealing-sounding soups include Garden Pea & Bacon, Cream of Celeriac (celery root) & Brandy with Crispy Pancetta, and Yellow Courgette (zucchini) & Cashel Blue Cheese. In the chowder catagory, I might try the Smoked Haddock & Potato or the Scallop Chowder, and for the casseroles, I'm enticed by the Smoked Salmon & Potato Gratin, Deviled Scallops, and Pot Roast Pheasant. Many of the stews rely heavily on staples such as lamb, potatoes and Guinness Stout, as would be expected in a book about Irish cookery. All in all, this soft-cover book is attractive, yet sturdy enough to handle many years propped up on the kitchen counter while Irish feasts are prepared. The whimsical cover art comes courtesy of Viki's sister, Barbara J. Heintz, an artish and illustrator who lives in Greenville, South Carolina. Random stories of people met on various trips and sites visited add a nice personal touch to Ireland's Comfort Food & Touring Attractions. --David Domine - Cookbook author

About the Author
Viki Pidgeon loves Ireland! The second of five children, Viki was born and raised in northern Ohio. She attended Solon High School and Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Kentucky, where she met her future husband, Bernard Pidgeon. Upon graduation, Bernard and Viki married and had two daughters, Heather and Brittany. Viki and Bernard presently reside in Shelby County, Kentucky. When the daughters started lives of their own, Viki and Bernard traveled to Ireland, the home of Bernard's grandfather. It was love at first sight for Viki, and the first of many trips across the Atlantic. On subsequent trips, she and Bernard logged thousands of miles traveling through the towns and villages, falling more and more in love with the land, its people and its heritage. Now holding dual citizenship in both the United States and Ireland, Viki longs for the time when she and Barney may have a small home in one of her favorite towns. Seeing Ireland's Comfort Food & Touring Attractions become a reality brings Viki a little closer to her dream.

Love this book and I don't even LIKE to cook!
By Jeri Landers
I purchased this book on an impulse. I was a fellow participant at a book festival when this book "walked" past me and I was charmed by the cover illustration. The fact that the word "Ireland" was in the title didn't hurt either, as I am a nut for anything of the Celtic persuasion. Well, not being fond of cooking hasn't kept me from enjoying each and every page of this book, which is so much MORE than a book about food and cooking. Little bits and pieces of traveling advice, interesting observations about the country and people, lovely photos, and tidbits of Irish trivia. And so,even I, the least enthusiastic cook in the world, am anxious to give many of these recipes a try. Who can resist recipes with names like: "Curragh of Kildare Irish Stew" and " Grandma Murphy's Broccoli and Blue Cheese Soup"... Yum! The book is beautifully done, of nice quality and certainly deserving of the IPPY Award it received.
