The author actually documented building his own Graywater system and then shared the experience he gained through this book. From The Back Cover: Throughout history changes in the lives of mankind have come from necessity or to improve the standard of living. Most changes start out with the idea for an improvement that creates ripples of change in all directions, just as a summer shower begins with a single raindrop. We are now faced with yet another necessity. In order to maintain our current standard of living, we must alter the way we use fresh water. In the future, our need for fresh water will double every twenty years. Plainly stated, potable water will never again be as cheap and accessible as it is today.
The purpose of this document is to (A) Educate the reader on the benefits of a graywater system for conservation, (B) Minimize the cost of installing a graywater system, and (C) Take the mystery out of septic system failures. At GRAYWATER RESOURCE INC. we didn't invent graywater-that was done by the first person who poured their bath water into a garden. We just add some fresh ideas for improving graywater systems and extending the life of septic systems. If you think your small contribution to conserving water can't make a difference, just remember: the flow of water over Niagara or down the Mississippi fell to earth one raindrop, one snowflake, at a time. Just as new technology brought waves of change in the past century, water conservation in this century may very well be "The Next Wave".

Reclaiming bath and laundry water or "graywater" has been an accepted practice in most countries for generations, and in some parts of the U.S. for about 30 years. As water and sewage costs continue to escalate and watering restrictions become more extreme, the use of graywater will become commonplace for conserving fresh water.
Today one of the most expensive and troublesome problems many homeowners face is septic system or drainfield failure. Most septic system failures are easily preventable with very little expense to the homeowner.
Graywater: The Next Wave was written to empower homeowners with the knowledge to prevent most septic system failures, provide economical recovery solutions, even after a septic system has failed, and reduce the ever increasing cost of water bills.

I'm on a septic system, as are other homes in my subdivision. I've often thought that there should be a cost effective way to re-use much of the water that I consume. This book describes several low-cost alternatives for implementing just such a system. The optimal Graywater system really depends upon what you want to accomplish and how much water you consume. This book is an excellent starting point for evaluating and developing an effective plan based upon an individual's water use pattern. References, including web resources, are also included for further study.
