Susan Cernyak-Spatz was born in Vienna in 1922. In the following twenty-three years she experienced many of the terrors of her fellow European Jews: early Nazi oppression in Berlin; post-"Anschluss" Vienna; Nazi occupied Prague; and deportation to Theresienstadt in 1942. But the true horrors of the Nazi "Final Solution" awaited her in Birkenau, the woman's concentration camp where she survived her internment, beginning in January, 1943, for two years. These months of hell were followed by a "Death March" and incarceration in Ravensbrück from which she and a group of fellow inmates walked away to freedom.
As Professor Emerita in German literature at UNC-Charlotte, Dr. Cernyak-Spatz continues to teach and to lecture about the Holocaust. This book is a rare firsthand testament of a Holocaust survivor. The audiobook version of this title is also now available on her website.

Never Forget: First Person Account of Auschwitz Survivor
By Anabel Buchenau
This first person account written by Dr. Susan Cernyak Spatz, Associate Professor Emerita at UNC Charlotte, will touch you tremendously. Her account will give you information and insights you have never had access to before. Her deportation from Prague to Theresienstadt and further deportation to Auschwitz are described in intimate detail. You will learn about the ghetto Theresienstadt, Cernayk's luck in not being deported from there to Treblinka with her mother, where she would have perished with her. Further you will follow her as she is deported to Auschwitz, where she is in an outside commando at first and almost dies from Thyphoid. The group of women with whom she bunks save her and eventually she is moved to an internal commando, working in Canada, a part of the camp where the incoming prisoners' belongings are sorted. With unwavering honesty and in an unemotional tone, Cernyak describes her relationships to guards and other prisoners as well as her daily struggle for survival. It is one of the SS guards who saves her life during the evacuation of Auschwitz, as the prisoners embark on a death march West to escape the approaching Russian military. Dr. Susan Cernyak's story is one that will touch you and will force you never to forget the atrocities of the Holocaust. It gives you insights into the psychology of victims and perpetrators. Her straightforward and detailed account tells of the suffering and the unbelievable strength it takes to survive. The book has been read by hundreds of university students, who have taken a course on the Holocaust. This book is an extremely important work, which should be read by everyone. It is accessible to everyone and will provide an insight into the life of a prisoner both in Theresienstadt and Auschwitz similar to those of Primo Levi and Norbert Troller. It is useful in history as well as literature classes that examine the Holocaust and scholars will find it a treasure trove as a primary document.

"Never Forget" - Susan Cernyak-Spatz
By Kbug1710
I had the very pleasurable honor of meeting Susan at UNC Charlotte earlier this month, and I bought and read this book. It is a remarkable retelling of her life during the Holocaust at Theresienstadt and Auschwitz-Birkenau. Anyone who is interested in learning more about the Holocaust and just what imprisoned Jews were forced to undergo should definitely read this book.
