The Whistling Tree

Don't we all enjoy a moment with nature. If we can only learn the countless stories it has to share. Using a child as the protagonist, the story line is wonderfully entertaining as well as instructive. A great book to purchase and share with a child. Not only will this sharing help in bonding, but in understanding what our imaginations can picture.

A bit too fantastical for my taste.

A bed that whistles?? Turns out this Cherokee child has a bed that was made from the wood of a woodpecker hole-riddled tree that "whistles" when air passes over it. It came from a sacred grove of trees. There is a story behind the woodpecker and the other animals in the forest. The girl revisits the remnants of that grove on a family trip. She rediscovers her roots along the way. Storyline is ok but could have been better, in my opinion. Any Native American child would have known from birth about his/her heritage and taken pride in it all along, not suddenly discovered it one day. Just my 2 cents....
