About the Author
John Vickers received his B.S. degree from the University of Hawaii, and has a Master of Science in Agronomy from UMass, Amherst. The author's interests are also far-flung, having worked as a U.S.D.A. Research Scientist, a Dept. of the Army Land Manager, a livestock farmer, a renovator of antique houses, and a freelancer for printing, publishing, and marketing companies. He is also the author three amateur astronomy atlases.

Pidgeon's love affair with the land of William Butler Yeats, James Joyce and George Bernard Shaw began after she and her husband, Barney, traveled there to visit the home of his grandfather. Since that day, she has dreamed of having her own place in Ireland and tries to spend at least part of each year exploring its rugged countryside and remote villages. "We both hold dual citizenship now - Irish and American," she says, "and it was during one of our holidays in Ireland that I was inspired to gather recipes and compile a book of Irish flavors. Many of the stews rely heavily on staples such as lamb, potatoes and Guinness Stout, as would be expected in a book about Irish cookery. All in all, this soft-cover book is attractive, yet sturdy enough to handle many years propped up on the kitchen counter while Irish feasts are prepared. The whimsical cover art comes courtesy of Viki's sister, Barbara J. Heintz, an artish and illustrator who lives in Greenville, South Carolina. About the Author
Viki Pidgeon loves Ireland! The second of five children, Viki was born and raised in northern Ohio. She attended Solon High School and Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Kentucky, where she met her future husband, Bernard Pidgeon. Upon graduation, Bernard and Viki married and had two daughters, Heather and Brittany. Viki and Bernard presently reside in Shelby County, Kentucky. When the daughters started lives of their own, Viki and Bernard traveled to Ireland, the home of Bernard's grandfather. It was love at first sight for Viki, and the first of many trips across the Atlantic. On subsequent trips, she and Bernard logged thousands of miles traveling through the towns and villages, falling more and more in love with the land, its people and its heritage. Now holding dual citizenship in both the United States and Ireland, Viki longs for the time when she and Barney may have a small home in one of her favorite towns. Love this book and I don't even LIKE to cook!

I purchased this book on an impulse. I was a fellow participant at a book festival when this book "walked" past me and I was charmed by the cover illustration.The fact that the word "Ireland" was in the title didn't hurt either, as I am a nut for anything of the Celtic persuasion. Well,not being fond of cooking hasn't kept me from enjoying each and every page of this book, which is so much MORE than a book about food and cooking. Little bits and pieces of traveling advice, interesting observations about the country and people,lovely photos, and tidbits of Irish trivia. And so,even I, the least enthusiastic cook in the world, am anxious to give many of these recipes a try. Who can resist recipes with names like: "Curragh of Kildare Irish Stew" and " Grandma Murphy's Broccoli and Blue Cheese Soup"... Yum! The book is beautifully done, of nice quality and certainly deserving of the IPPY Award it received.

Not worth the money

This book is just short summaries of Nevada locations and some people. Very little detail, most from already very often published articles. Very disappointed because I was referred to this book for a specific topic; Metropolis Nevada and there was no mention of that historical city at all. Sorry I bought it

A Little Editing Would Go a Long Way

This book presents interesting little snippets of Nevada history - nothing so grandiose as the state's history, but rather snapshots of towns, individuals, and natural features. And really, that's more intruiging.

However, this book suffers greatly from a lack of editing. Numerous typographical errors mar the flow of the story, and some of the text just needs to be tightened. In one case, the sentence "State statues forbade the Chinese from owning property," is followed two short paragraphs later by "The Chinese were prohibited by state statute from owning property." (page 115)

A good read, and one that can be taken in small bites, but in dire need of a good editor.

Wrestling with God (and living to tell the tale)

out of Nazareth to live in Peter's house

in lovely seashore Capernaum twenty miles

from me and family."

In his fourth book of Poetry: WRESTLING WITH GOD, Father Kilian McDonnell, OSB, monk and theologian at Saint John's Abbey in Collegeville, Minnesota uses "the idiom of the common people" to speak for those who "love and adore their Lord" yet "limp away from the wrestling match" as they try to understand the mysteriously infinite ways of GOD.

Insight into Mary's bitter-sweet life is one of the poems in the first section titled: "STEPPING INTO THE RING." Father Kilian McDonnell gives voice to one of the sorrows which surely the mother of GOD was well acquainted. As JESUS fulfilled his destiny, did Mary ponder the prophesy of Simeon?

"and a sword will pierce even your own soul--

to the end that thoughts from many hearts will be revealed."
(Luke 2:35 NASB)

Within the second section: "TWO COUNT," Killian takes us through Abraham's lament of "Every Promise a Fang."

"I bind Isaac on the altar of Moriah,

but you stay my hand. We return to Beer-sheba heavy with knowing

God. I wait, wary."

Father Kilian shares a glimpse of sad reality in "COUNT THREE," as his friend and fellow monk, mathematician Father Florian Muggli, OSB, struggles with Alzheimers.

"I stand

in freedom, watch you stretch a palsied

hand, stroke shiny knobs,

open doors to your antiseptic dark

that covers the math of limits

and the infinite. The study of functions

to lift a rocket, gauge

the arc to the moon, ends

when your spoon cannot

calculate the distance from carrots

on the plate to your mouth."

Even as we love and ardently worship YAHWEH, surely all of us experience times of wondering what GOD is doing and why. Speaking the words we often fear to articulate, Father Kilian leads us through the valley of wrestling to a place "On the Highest Ziggurat" where we realize that

"If I climbed the highest ziggurat,

I could not touch your lowest mystery."

Best recent book I've read

I don't generally read poetry but I loved this -- every poem. I read it on a silent retreat and was captivated by it. I'm looking forward to reading more of Father McDonnell's poetry.

I love Kilian McDonnell's poems. They have a spiritual message as well as a bit of humor. And the titles of his poetry books are priceless. Who else would ever think of "Wrestling with God"? I hope we will soon see another book of McDonnell poetry.

Most useful information omitted

This book is fine for people who have never heard of a 529 plan. However, for people who would like to compare 529 plans in order to choose the best investment vehicle for college savings will be sadly disappointed. The book offers a checklist of questions to ask about state 529 plans, yet, in the description of each plan, none of these questions are answered. This requires that you look up or contact each plan individually in order to get these questions answered such as whether the plan allows rollovers, if the plan is IRS qualified and if the plan accepts contributions from non-owners, etc. Also, most people comparing 529 plans would like some general idea of how popular each fund is and how well it has been perfomring recently. The author could have easily summarized this information generally for each plan but chose not to, again, leaving it to the reader to research each plan individually. I would not recommend this book. The information given about each 529 state plan is almost identical across states and, again, information that would distinguish each plan from another is omitted.

Excellent overview of strategies/options for saving for college (not just 529 plans)

This book clarified several doubts, myths and misconceptions about 529 plans. I was concerned that the book only discussed 529 plans (because of the subtitle), but even though 529 plans are the main topic covered, it also talks about other options (UGMA/UTMA accounts, Coverdell ESAs, etc.) compares and contrasts them.

The book is clearly written and explains financial and tax details of 529 plans at a level most readers will easily understand. You should buy the latest edition (2007) as it contains the most updated information. For instance it mentions about the pension bill that extended the tax-free account withdrawals for 529s beyond 2010.

I was also very happy about the detailed chapter on tax benefits. It mentions several unique features of some plans, for instance the fact that if you are a resident of the state of Pennsylvania, you can now deduct contributions (up to $12,000) to any 529 plan from your state income tax.

About a third of the book has an overview of 529 plans offered by each state, while useful, this information is also available in the companion [...], which also happens to be an excellent resource. In my wish list for this book I would include access to the premium content on the companion website.

Has some great ideas for 529 plans. Take home message: it's not hard to get started, and get started NOW if you've not already! I wanted to get a better idea of 529s, as we've had Upromise for quite a while now. Good State-by-State analysis.

With A FEAST OF PEONIES, Obi has contributed to the lexicon of techniques available for the creation of works of fiction. A FEAST OF PEONIES is written in the second person singular viewpoint. Typically, this viewpoint is used as the voice of the conscience of a character, or it is used to make off-hand generalizations. Obi, however, has taken the technique one step farther. Using a consistent deep-in-the-mind approach in conjunction with the second person viewpoint, Obi has created an in-the-skin experience for the reader that is unique in literature. The experience is more immediate than that of the first-- and certainly more immediate than that of the third-- person viewpoint. The reader becomes the character. Sometimes considered a tour de force, Obi has used it with finesse and skill.

About the Author
Obi is a native of Chicago, Illinois. He graduated from Hyde Park High School and served in the U.S. Air Force. He did his basic training at Lackland Air Force Base (AFB) in San Antonio, Texas, then went for further training at Goodfellow AFB in San Angelo, Texas. He was stationed in Darmstadt, Germany, for three years working in intelligence.

After a short return to the U.S. where he worked at several odd jobs including six months as an assembler for an electronics company near Mt. Vernon, New York, he spend 15 months traveling in Europe where he hitch-hiked from Lapland in Scandinavia to Morocco in North Africa working along the way at a variety of jobs from farm hand to factory worker to dishwasher to carpenter’s assistant, mainly in Sweden and Germany. His travels have taken him to Oslo, Norway; Stockholm, Sweden; Copenhagen, Denmark; Amsterdam, the Netherlands; Paris, France; Cologne, Germany; Barcelona, Spain; and Tangier, Morocco.

Upon his return to the United States, he attended the University of Illinois at Chicago, where he majored in Philosophy and minored in English. He did further graduate work and later attended the John Marshall Law School, earning a Juris Doctor degree. He has also done graduate work in Computer Science and Telecommunications at De Paul University. He has worked in Chicago and throughout the United States as a computer consultant designing and implementing fault-tolerant applications in a wide range of industries from banking to transportation to manufacturing. He has worked as a criminal defense attorney representing high-profile death row inmates, several of whom were released pursuant to DNA testing. He has been active in third-party politics.

He has also found time for a full and rich family life, with seven children and one grandchild. His hobbies include physical training and martial arts, African and Conga drumming, and yoga and meditation.

He currently works and lives with his family in Chicago.

In A FEAST OF PEONIES, author Obi created a memorable tale of sex, deceit, violence, and intrigue. As the reader, you were taken on a roller-coaster ride that was the life, loves and sexual escapades of one Ashanti Ra. Ashanti, an intelligent, successful man, found himself torn between two lovers, a female lawyer and a drag queen by the name of Phyllis, whom he woke next to one morning after a drunken one night stand. As Ashanti struggled with forbidden desires and a jealous lover, the unthinkable occurred, making his life even more complicated.
Following a volatile tenants meeting in the condominium complex in which Ashanti resided, Earl, the much-hated president of the tenant's association, was found slumped over a desk in his office. Ashanti was discovered by a fellow tenant standing over the body. At the wrong place and at the wrong time, Ashanti became the prime suspect in a murder investigation. On the lam and searching for the truth regarding what occurred that fateful night, Ashanti realized that few people could be trusted. Desperate to clear his name and uncover what really happened to Earl, Ashanti had to rely on instincts, wits and Phyllis to keep from ending up in a prison cell.
A FEAST OF PEONIES was at times shocking and explicit. The plot took many different twists and turns that left me exhausted. There were characters that I believed could have been developed a bit more and the resolution to the "mystery" was somewhat unsatisfying. However, Obi's unique style of writing drew me into the heart of the action. Unlike other contemporary writers, Obi incorporated spiritual and philosophical ideology about life, relationships and good versus evil into his novel, giving insight into what possibly motivated some of the characters. The author also presented a harsh look into how sexual child abuse affects a person years after the fact. All in all, the colorful characters and steamy scenes kept me turning the page. Obi has written an interesting and unforgettable novel.

An Erotic Thriller

Obi's Feast of Peonies opens with its main character, Ashanti Ra caught in a very compromising position. He wakes up in bed with Phyllis, a Latino drag queen that he met at a club. Phyllis easily entices Ashanti to have intercourse with him. This begins a very fast pace ride in the lives of these characters.

Ashanti is a computer programmer by trade and is on the board of directors for the tenants association where he resides. He is dating Jean Dobson and she is patiently awaiting a marriage proposal. A heated tenant association meeting introduces additional characters, one of whom Ashanti is accused of having murdered.

Ashanti is on the lam from the law. The people he trusts most seem to be untrustworthy, even Jean seems to betray him. Phyllis is the only person he can turn to for help. The story moves pretty quickly from that point. It is laden with sex, violence and suspense.

The book left me feeling empty. There were so many subplots that could have been developed into story lines. It seems the author centered the story on some very explicit sex scenes instead of telling the story. I also had a problem with the main character's ability to interact intimately with both male and females

I did enjoy Obi's ability to draw the reader into the story by using the second person viewpoint. This is very seldom done in a novel and he pulled it off successfully. With more character and plot development, this would have been a really good book.

sex, philosophy and the devil

I read the book, yes the whole book, the same night. I didn't think the sex was that weird or freaky or overwhelming to the book. I really didn't think that sex was the point. I more got the philosophy deal. I loved the parts of the book where Obi wrote about what i'm sure were parts of his own childhood on the south side of Chicago.
I have to say, though, that my favorite part of the book was the philisophical discussion of the main character while in bed with the guy and about to have sex, yet discussing God and Satan. I have found that these types of discussions always seem to work for me in the most bizarre of circumstances. There are other books (i.e Ann Rice Memnoch the Devil.) that discuss God and the devil, but not as well and concisley. I loved the non-ending. Had there been a story line conclusion, I feel it would have completely screwed up the point.
I thought it was a fast paced, provocative, yet very deep read. Thanks!

Kabbalah, psychology and myth

I first read The Sapphire Staff when it came out some years ago and thought 'good...not particularly for me, but very good.' Then, having been to a conference hosted by Megan Wagner and her husband Jim Larkin of Tree of Life Teachings in San Francisco, I picked it up again.

The book has not changed - but now I was ready for it. I have devoured it. Technically it could do with a bit of an edit here and there for repetition but for content, it's wide-ranging, powerful, effective and -- in places -- mind-blowing.

The meditations, particularly the Gatekeeper, are very powerful and effective.

It's a book I will no go back to again and again (and I strongly recommend you get onto Megan's Tree of Life Teachings website and get the CDs/downloads of the book because the meditations are all on there). Very highly recommended for the serious spiritual seeker who is prepared to get down and dirty and clear out those psychological and spiritual blocks.

The Sapphire Staff offers a comprehensive tour of the Kabbalah Tree of Life complete with shamanistic, mythological and biblical references for 7 major self initiations towards the fully realized human. Megan Wagner provides a wealth of exercises, meditations and stories to explore the progression from the instinctive body self to expand into the sense of community before establishing one's separate identity by exposing our truth, transferring old patterns and finally connecting with the Divine to receive healing and experience wholeness. She does an excellent job of skillfully guiding you through your belief systems and past experiences to uncover the core of your inner genious. Highly recommended!
